"We have called you here to discuss the problems arising in the world." an elderly woman addressed the six travelers as they entered teh Council chamber. "You see, we have reports that not only are there hunters near our stronghold, but we have had to sightings of adult gryphon's in the area.
Dinera shuttered, gryphons! While if they were caught and raised respectfully before to long they could be powerful allies. But all to often they were raised to be dragon trackers, sort of like beagles for hunting foxes, or pigs for truffles.
"Gryphons!" Ortha gasped, her hand raised to her mouth. She had seen an infant gryphon once, very cute, but it had tried to bite her finger and she had stayed away ever since.
"Yes gryphons." said a middle aged copper forest dragon. "And we all know what that means, someone is trying to find us."
"And has succeeded," Cairan whispered in Ortha's ear. She shushed him and snuggled closer to his body, wanting more of her touching him.
"we are running out of options. All we can think of is to leave the city." the old woman sighed, this was very difficult.
"But we can't leave." Xiri said. "I have seen what gryphons can do to dragons, where would we go? How would we hide. They are practically made to hunt down dragons." Xiri shivered, the Heartland Stone had shown her to many gruesome images of dragons young and old being ripped apart by gryphons. Surth put a gentle wign about her shivering frame.
"We have no other choice. Fighting would be suicide, and locking ourselves inside the walls would only starve our people." the entire Council looked haggard, they were just as scared as anyone else.
"So why do you want us?" Taron asked, leaning in closer to Dinera's growing form.
"To set an example. If Ortha, Xiri, and Dinera, which if you haven't seen have become quite the celebrities."
"We noticed," Cairan said irritably, he had been quite annoyed with the dragon and human population of Inthelar trying to give them free food or lodging. It was very agrivating.
"Yes well, if they gave a good show and supported our leaving, we may get better support." the aged woman said wearily.
"So, you want us to be mascots?" Dinera asked raising her head.
"Well if you wish to be so barbaric, then yes." said a middle aged man on the womans left.
Dinera, we can't afford to allianate the council. Ortha told her dragon calmly in the privacy of their minds.
I know, but we can't play the scapegoat, if this goes wrong they'll blame it on us. Dinera looked at her rider.
Well then, we'll just have to make sure it goes right then won't we? Ortha took a step forward, and addressed the council herself.
"We will play your mascots, but on one condition. We take over all aspects of this exodus." Cairan looked at Ortha like she was crazy.
What are you doing? Taron asked
Saving our buts if you please. Ortha told him simply.
"Why would you want this?" the woman asked
"To make sure we remaina good appearance and so do you." Ortha replied, a smile on her face that gave Cairan a slight twinge of fear down his spine.
"Then you have the power to plan this exodus." the woman said.
"Thank you." Ortha said simply. With that they turned to leave. Outside the council chamber, the four dragons and Cairan turned on Ortha.
"What in hell were you thinking?" Cairan screamed at her.
"Calm down, calm down. I have a plan. Now I seem to remember a balled that said something about a mass exodus like this. If only I couold remember were they went." she banged her head on her palm.
"Well you'd better think fast because you have to tell these people where they are leaving to." Surth siad angrily.
"I will, I will, trust me." Ortha said calmly.
