(OOC: This was just an idea floating around my head, so I figured I'd see if anyone wanted to join in on this one. As usual, if you have any questions, PM them to me, and I'll try to answer ASAP.)
Safyre struggled to draw an agonizing breath into her lungs as her wings beat unsteadily, dragging her forward through the air. The odd-looking Skybax knew she didn't have the strength to keep flying much further.
“I must reach the Rookery...” she thought over and over with each beat of her wings. The Rookery was where her brother, Skyfyre, had told her to go if there was trouble. And she indeed had gotten into trouble. A group of rogue Skybaxes, who called themselves the Untamed, terrorized their more civilized comrades, driving them out of their homes purely for the fun of it.
Skyfyre was part of the Waterfall City Surveillance Group that patrolled the Island, keeping on the lookout for any form of trouble that might present itself; whether it was by Rainy Basin carnivores, a flash fire, flood, etc.
Safyre, on the other hand, never had much encounters with humans or other saurians. She looked different from other Skybaxes, and was made fun of quite a bit for it. Her physical shape was exactly as it should be, but her coloration was drastically different. Instead of the traditional red and tan coloration typical of other members of her species, a freak twist of DNA made every part of her that was supposed to be red was made blue. Indeed, this made Safyre quite self-conscious and shy.
Safyre and her brother were hatched in the wild, but made their nest near the Rookery a few years later so that Skyfyre could learn how to wear a harness and fly with a partner on his back. He was soon making trips back and forth between home and Waterfall City, often gone for a few months at a time. Safyre was content to stay where she was, avoiding contact with others and caring for their nest.
It was only a few days after her brother had left for a month long expedition around the Island when Safyre was accosted by the Untamed. Their leader, Nightwing, was much bigger than Safyre, but she defended her nest as best she could. She managed to escape with a few scratches, but her wing was torn badly, making for a shaky and painful flight.
At last, she saw her destination just ahead. Squeezing out the last bit of strength from her rapidly dwindling reserves, she landed gracelessly on the nearest platform. Her wing hurt horribly, and it was difficult to breathe. She let out a pitiful distress call before collapsing.

Someone in the vicinity did hear the distress call. Another Skybax, a female, had just returned from a flight. She recognized the shaky flight; she had a small but permenant wing tear herself. She could fly well enough but only if the weather wasn't too bad. And her landings had become rather tricky.
She no longer had a rider herself; a basin rescue accident had taken his life, the same incident that had resulted in her wing tear. But she still helped where she could, not knowing if she would take another human but enjoying the work.
Highsoar saw the odd-colored Skybax's rough landing. First, she sounded a distress call, ana larm that there had been an emergency. She then called out a series of chirps and caws greeting and asking what had happened. Highsoar too knew of the rogues; even though she had no rider, they still seemed to enjoy toying with her. Several times she'd had to land nearly out of control, though she'd avoided injury.
She watched as humans came to help; knowing that she might have to be the one to communicate to the humans what had happened. She, somehow, had inherited the same genetic mutation as her ancestor, Windchaser. The 'speaking gene'. But she used it only when necesssary; she didn't like being singled out either, and more, it hurt her throat. Few knew of it but she had a feeling she'd have to use it now.
"shee saysss rrroouggee sskyyybaxxeesss attackeedddd. I knoowww theemmmm. Unntammeeed. Attacckkk meee as welllll. Donntttt knoowwww wwhyyyy."
(ooc: I like this one. I can see Highsoar's ability coming in handy between the humans and skybaxes. Nice work!)

Brightfeather was still panting from her message flight between two Ovinutrix sisters, one who lived in Treetown and the other in Canyon City. While it delighted her to bring news of a new hatchling, it was a bit much for the tiny dinobird. She wouldn't have made it at all if a kind Gallimimus hadn't given her a ride for the first part of the journey. While the Microraptor was more agile than the massive pterosaurs that were everywhere around here, she was not good at distance. Her tiny, delicate muzzle was open as she panted furiously. In front of her was a human sized cup of tea - almost big enough for her to sit in. She was about to dip her beak in when she heard an uproar from outside of the window. She took a hasty swallow and almost scalded herself, then dove outside.
Brightfeather circled above the scene, clicking nervously to herself. One of the humans - she thought he was the doctor, maybe - was examining the blue skybax. Another pair seemed to be consulting the big skybax with the torn wing. Brightfeather wished quickly and fervently that there was a sandbox somewhere near, or else she'd be in serious trouble for communication. She shrilled piercingly as she dove. No one ever meant to step on a Microraptor, but in a commotion like this, it didn't pay to take chances. She held out her tiny clawed wing briefly to the doctor. He reciprocated, though distraced, with his left hand.
She trotted to the head of the injured blue skybax. It wasn't breathing right, and she could see panic in its eye. The little feathered dinosaur presented her hand again, spreading her wings to their lordly two foot wingspan. Brightfeather peeped and chirruped softly, trying to be reassuring. She knew many pterosaurs were fascinated by her bright, iridescent tail feathers. The shimmer of colors was rare, except in tthe dinobirds. She flicked her tail back and forth, chirruping softly. She was no doctor, but she could try to calm down this injured giant. Brightfeather was constantly in motion, clawed feet dancing and bright grey eyes darting from figure to figure.

Gavyn O'Malley heard the commotion outside and left the infirmary to see what was going on. He heard the two distress calls and feared a fight had broken out. Skybax disputes weren't common, but could often turn nasty. The 23 year old healer was young for his profession, but skilled in the art of healing the larger pterosaurs that frequented the Rookery. He was tall, 5'11”, with rusty brown hair and green eyes. Built strong enough to somewhat physically restrain a flailing Skybax, his touch was still gentle and soothing.
Although he had healed many Skybaxes during his years, never once had he actually ridden one. All others he'd encountered already had a partner, and were wary about letting someone else ride them. Besides, most were still not fit to ride when he finished his work and had to move on.
When he made it to the platform, his jaw dropped at the sight that greeted him. A beautiful Skybax of shades of blue and apricot lay crumpled on the ground. Racing quickly to its side, he checked to see if it was still alive. He sighed in relief when he saw it still breathing.
“What happened?” he asked, a slight Irish brogue edging his voice.
Two Apprentice riders were speaking to another Skybax whom he recognized as Highsoar. One turned to him. “Highsoar here says that this 'Bax was attacked by a group of rogues calling themselves The Untamed. They drove her from her home, and she was injured during the escape.”
Gavyn frowned when he heard this. The Untamed were not known to him, but if they were attacking for no reason at all, this was serious. He was momentarily distracted by a tinny shriek that descended from above. A Microraptor landed at his feet and greeted him. He half-heartedly returned the gesture of greeting, but kept his focus on the injured newcomer. Never before had he seen such colors on a Skybax before. It was unnatural, yet fascinating. He watched as the tiny Microraptor seemed to try to reassure the massive pterosaur. Keeping an eye on the small raptor, Gavyn made his way cautiously forward. Holding out his hand, his fingertips grazed the 'Bax's shoulder.
Sensing an unfamiliar touch, the 'Bax exploded into motion, scrambling away from him, trembling. With reflexes impressively quick, Gavyn scooped up the Microraptor into his arms and out of harm's way. The tiny raptor was startled at the sudden outburst and Gavyn laid a gentle hand on her head, drawing his finger down the length of her spine. This soothing motion calmed her, and he placed her back on the ground, where she blinked up at him before turning back to face the exhausted, injured Skybax.
Gavyn reached into the pouch on his waist and pulled out a reed-like object similar to one found in many woodwind instruments. Placing it in his mouth, the reed allowed him to adequately mimic the caws and chirps of most pterosaurs. Holding out his hands, palms up in a gesture of goodwill and to show he meant no harm, he spoke to the Skybax.
“What's your name?” he said in her tongue. The Skybax blinked at him curiously but did not reply. “Do you understand me?” he asked. Again the 'Bax didn't reply. Once again, her strength was failing fast and she slumped to the ground, this time, unconscious. Gavyn ordered several men to move the 'Bax into the infirmary to be treated. After this was accomplished, he turned to the Microraptor and crouched down to her level. The reed also doubled for the clicks and whistles used in raptor-speak, but to fully communicate with this raptor, he'd need the special artificial resonating chamber he'd developed solely for communicating with raptors who did not speak common Dinotopian. Unfortunately, he hadn't expected to encounter a raptor at the Rookery, but he tried to make-do with what he had. He spoke a few simple clicks and whistles in what he hoped was the Microraptor dialect.
“The Skybax seemes to be reassured by your company. If it's not too inconvienient, I'd appreciate it if you stayed with her until she awakes. I'll see to it a sandbox is placed nearby, and if you can get some answers from her when she awakes, we can try to figure out what's going on.”
He stood again and headed over to Highsoar. He cawed and chirped in her language. “I can understand you perfectly well, Highsoar, so there's no need to strain yourself. You mentioned something about meeting The Untamed. Can you tell me of your experience with them?”
(OOC: Welcome, Highsoar and Katrina! Brightfeather was thinking wistfully of her tea when the skybax panicked. Her bird quick reactions were somewhat dulled by exhaustion, and the doctor grabbed her before she could jump clear. She chittered gratefully, but her attention was on the skybax. Brightfeather was perpetually fascinated by the huge fliers. Usually, the interest was mutual; few of the massive 'bax had seen anything like the tiny, feathered dinobird with her splashes of bright color. She was surprised when the doctor petted her, but didn't flinch. Her feathers, which had been erect with surprise, flattened to her back again.
Brightfeather burbled cheerfully. Subtle, she had long since discovered, didn't work too well when no one understood you. Besides, she could smell a faint nervousness on him, and wanted to offer some comfort. Still, she was happy to be put back on the ground. This time, she stayed a little further back. Dull reaction time was no good when everything was so much bigger. Most of the rumble of conversation was too deep and slow for her to catch, and anyhow, her attention was still focused on the wounded pterosaur and the booted feet of the humans around. The reeds caught her by surprise. Brightfeather backed up, watching the strange display. Humans making pterosaur noises was a novelty. She'd seen all variety of flutes and drums. She'd seen some manage her own maniraptoran version of the theropod dialect. She'd never seen one talk to a skybax in the pterosaur's own tongue.
Brightfeather's eyes darted from the man to the pterosaur. The size of those wings caught her attention. If twenty Microraptors flew wingtip to wingtip, they'd equal the wingspan of one of these giants. She stepped forward again, and then cooed in disappointment as the big pterosaur passed out. Truth be told, Brightfeather wasn't far from that state herself. It had still been four days hard flying since her last decent rest, full meal, and enough time to get a dust bath and put her feathers in order. She darted forward, cooing softly. Ridiculous as it was, she felt as protective about the Quetzacoatlus as she did about her rookery's chicks. Perhaps it was the relative youth of the skybax, or the fact that she was injured.
Brightfeather jerked to attention when she realized the man was trying to communicate with her. She could make out a few words - skybax, company, stay, sandbox, awakes. She spread her wings out wide and low in a kind of avian shrug. She watched the five humans sent to move the skybax warily. One of them dropped to her knees and extended a hand to Brightfeather. The little dinosaur tapped her claws gently to the human's palm.
The tall, rawboned Apprentice spoke softly to Brightfeather as they maneuvered Safyre's big, hollow boned body on top of their shoulders. Special care was taken with the huge, delicate wings. "You must be the one who told Seires that she was an aunt. You're sure a tiny thing, and not at all like a pterosaur." The Apprentice was a girl, with hair so black it almost seemed blue and olive skin. Her hair was tied back in a ponytail with a bright blue hairband. Brightfeather didn't understand a single word, but she burbled wearily in response. Once again, she took to the air. This time, she noticed the looseness in her muscles. Tomorrow, she considered ruefully, was going to hurt. A lot. Her body was more taxed then she supposed.
She followed the walkers. With their fragile burden, they moved far slower than she would have like. It was more difficult to fly slowly, on the verge of stalling, then to manage a faster pace. Brightfeather circled, gliding above them. Eventually, they made their way to a big, open barn. The roof was far overhead, and Brightfeather was delighted to see a sandbox and, more importantly, a few bails of straw which would make a fine bed for the little dinosaur. She landed gracefully beside the sandbox, and began message-dancing while the humans carefully put Safyre down. While only two tiny toes actually left their impression, her script was legible.
"Named Brightfeather. Seires understand me. Can talk. Need tea. Need food - fruit, insects. Need sleep. Will stay with the pterosaur. Calm her down. Can understand what humans say, if speak fast and high. Deep slow no good. Breathe deep, fly high." Brightfeather was too tired to compose it in anything but shorthand.
The same tall girl paused to read the Microraptor's note. She smiled at Brightfeather. "Shazrad. I'll get Seires."
Brightfeather watched the last of the humans leave the barn. Her head swiveled to look at her massive charge. She flattened her crest feathers alone, a gesture of mild disgust. So much for a good rest. The young bax fluted in her sleep, and Brightfeather relaxed. She kicked one of the hay bales into a more appealing shape, then lay down. She tucked her legs against her chest, folded her head under her wing, and curled her tail around her body. She dozed fitfully, starting at every noise or shift of weight from the injured skybax.

Above the Rookery, Nightwing circled. He watched Safyre land and the commotion that followed. Foolish female. She shouldn't have run from him. If no one else had been outside, he could've taken care of her right then and there, but another Skybax had shown up and alerted others. That certainly put a damper on things.
He knew he couldn't stay there for long. Someone was sure to see him, and that was the last thing he wanted. Circling once more, he turned and headed back toward home.
---,--'--(@
The Skybax slept for many hours. During that time, Gavyn treated the tear in her wing, which would heal properly in time, and tended to the other cuts and scrapes she'd sustained during her mysterious fight. He would have to wait until the blue Skybax awoke to try and talk to her again. Thankfully, it seemed that the tiny dinobird had understood a little of what he said about staying with the 'Bax.
Gavyn listened to her pterosaurian snore and smiled. It wasn't often he heard something like that, and it was amusing. Looking down at Brightfeather, he saw her peeking at the 'Bax every time it moved.
'Like a mother looking out for her chick...' he thought. He had brought her some tea and a few choice insects that were usually reserved for the pterosaur hatchlings. She had chittered an exhausted reply that he assumed was a 'thank you' and he clicked what he hoped was a 'You're welcome' in reply. He then set up a small sleeping pallet nearby and settled in himself for a rest until the mysterious newcomer awakened.
---,--'--(@
Safyre wasn't sure what awoke her, but her eyes slowly opened and she stretched. A jolt of pain shuddered across her wing and she saw the bandages. Looking around, panic welled up in her mind at the sight of this unfamiliar place. She scrambled upright and called out shrilly. It was a cry of panic that awoke Gavyn and Brightfeather.
Other Apprentice riders heard the call and came running. This only seemed to add to Safyre's agitation as she tried to back away from these numerous unfamiliar creatures. They were simply trying to reassure her and calm her, but Safyre couldn't understand them. She snapped at any who came too close and searched for a way to escape. But none presented itself and Safyre ended up backing herself into a corner. She was trembling, and ready for a fight.
Gavyn soon made himself heard above the din around him. “Everyone just leave her alone! She's frightened by all of us here, and we're only making it worse by trying to contain her!” The other Apprentices heard the wisdom in this and backed away, leaving Gavyn and Brightfeather to deal with the petrified Skybax alone.

ooc: I'll try to catch up. Sorry I didn't reply earlier.
IC: When the question about the Untamed was asked, Highsoar replied "Several times they have chased me. They do it when the wind is high because they know I am not steady then. But other times too. They chase and dive-bomb. I try to evade them but it's hard. Sometimes I have to go down and land. Usually it's a hard landing." She was glad she could speak in her own tongue instead of human.
Later on, when Safyre panicked, she was also in the barn, resting herself after her return trip. She was startled awake by the other 'bax's cries but quickly calmed. She nodded in agreement when Gavyn told them to stay back. "This place isn't familar. Strange to her. So are the creatures."
Turning a few steps, she called reassuringly to the other Skybax, not going near but hoping she'd be calmed hearing another of her own kind speak.
"No one will hurt you. The walkers helped the wounds. They don't know they frightened you. Seek peace, sky sister."
(ooc: If I ran a little short, it's because I'm tired and want to get to bed. I don't think it's too short though.)

Brightfeather felt a lot better some food inside her crop. The tea was sweet and strong, exactly as she liked it. The brown haired man had stayed all night, and Brightfeather decided she liked him. He seemed confident and sincere, without being cocky or annoying.
She dozed lightly again, snatching at sleep. The little dromaesaurid was shocked awake by the sounds of movement from her charge, then a piercing alarm call. In the chaos that followed, Brightfeather's main concern was not getting trampled. Booted feet were stomping everywhere, and their attention was on Safyre, not an ankle-high dinosaur. Brightfeather whistled with alarm and darted away from one set of feet, only to have to jump away from another. By dashing out of the crush, she managed enough room to take off. In the air, she could breathe easy, though her muscles were currently reminding her why she hadn't wanted to fly today.
The apprentices had stepped back, giving Safyre enough room to spread her huge wings twice over, had she been so inclinced. Brightfeather noticed that the female bax with the torn wing was in the barn, too. At that point, Brightfeather decided to take a calculated risk.
She knew that she was more agile and quicker to react then the pterosaurs, should anything go wrong. Brightfeather dove, and landed just out of the reach of Safyre's enormous beak. Once again, Brightfeather presented her open hand, cooing softly. The little feathered dinosaur bobbed her head delicatly, her legs tensed to jump out of trouble if the pterosaur paniced.

Safyre calmed when she saw the humans back off. The taller human stayed near, made no movement and did not come any nearer.
"No one will hurt you. The walkers helped the wounds. They don't know they frightened you. Seek peace, sky sister," the other Skybax said. Safyre looked at her.
“Who are you?” she squawked. “Where am I? Where's Skyfyre?”
During this, Gavyn had retrieved his reed and put it in his mouth. “My name is Gavyn O'Malley, and this is the Rookery. You flew here with an injured wing from a fight with the... “Untamed” I think it was. We don't know who Skyfyre is.”
At this, Safyre's agitation returned. “I must find him,” she screeched, her wings fluttering nervously. “I must warn him about the Untamed!”
Gavyn realized that the presence of so many individuals was truly making the situation worse. He ushered everyone else out and turned to Highsoar.
“I'll leave her to you and the little feathered one. Try to find out as much as you can about what happened. When you're through, don't leave her alone. Make sure someone is with her. We can't have her trying to fly; her wing is far too damaged for that.” He walked over to the sandbox and left a similar message for Brightfeather, then left, leaving the agitated Skybax to the two caretakers.
---,--'--(@
Safyre was surprised to see the little feathered raptor land before her. She held out her claw and cooed softly. Safyre had never seen a creature so small, or so brightly colored. She dipped her head down to the small Saurian's level and stared at it for a moment. The tiny creature chittered at her, and exteneded her claw a little further.
Confusion glimmered in Safyre's eyes a moment. She'd never seen this gesture before, but apparently the little Dinobird expected its return. Creeping her right wing forward in an easy, non-threatening manner, her delicate fingertips gently touched the small Microraptor's claw.
Suddenly, the back door burst open and another Apprentice rider and Skybax sauntered in. Safyre screeched and scrambled back into the darkest corner of the room, trembling in fright and surprise. The human man was shorter than Gavyn by only 2 inches, but was more powerfully built. His hair was a dark chocolate brown, and his hazel eyes sparkled with mischief. The larger male Skybax that followed him also had an ornery look about him. His large beak shot forward and poked his human partner in the back.
The man turned around and pushed the 'Bax's head away. “Cut it out, Cloudrunner. Go bother someone else.” He turned back around and looked at the almost empty room. “Now where'd everybody go?” The man also had an Irish brogue, but was more heavily accented than Gavyn. He saw the three Saurians and walked over in their direction. Cloudrunner ambled over to Highsoar.
“Howdy!” he fluted. “The name's Cloudrunner, and that's my partner, Connor O'Rourke. Don't think I've seen you around here before. You new?” His eyes caught sight of Safyre. “Who's the blue weirdo over there?” he asked quietly.
---'--,--(@
Connor, meanwhile, had caught sight of something else: Brightfeather. He rached down and picked the little feathered Saurian up and held her in his hand, examining her from all angles.
“And just what are you supposed to be? A Compy that fell into a bag of feathers or something?”
It was merely a joke, but unfortunately, Connor's voice just high and quick enough for Brightfeather to understand every word of it...
(OCC: Not a good first impression, but don't worry. They're not bad, just ornery. :

The little microraptor was gratified when the skybax finally returned her gesture. At least they were communicating. For the first time, she questioned if the big flier really belonged with the others. Safyre's behavior had not been like the actions of the other skybax, and she was far too jumpy. Perhaps... The blue quetzacoatlus was a stranger to Canyon City, like Brightfeather herself. She cocked her head and chittered inquisitively. At that point, the pair burst in. Brightfeather lept away from Safyre as the big pterosaur flinched and backed away. She turned, placing herself between her charge and the menace. Much to her disgust, Brightfeather found herself being picked up for the second time in less than twenty-four hours. When would people learn to ask before grabbing? Brightfeather sighed softly to herself. Apparently, today was a day for being manhandled. Being insulted, to boot, made the situation no better. "Says the hairless, tailless rat," she sallied back, perfectly aware that he wasn't liable understand her, and not caring particularly if he did. "Do I look like a bloody kid's toy or something?" It was, as always, the diamond of iridescent, shimmering feathers on the tip of her tail that attracted the most attention. She had blue feathers along her crest and decorating the edges of all four wings. Brightfeather contented herself with glaring up until the point where she got tired of being held, whereupon she pointedly grabbed his thumb in her tiny, sharp teeth. She wasn't biting down hard enough to draw blood, but her grasp made it apparent that it was an option. Brightfeather was sore, cranky, exhausted, and had nearly been trampled. Being grabbed without so much as a by your leave was not something she was prepared to tolerate. ***** Shazrad had had a horrible time locating Seires, the ovinutrix who was supposed to understand Brightfeather. One never understands how big the city was until one tried to find one person, even a friend, in it. She finally tracked Seires down in a little pastry shop. The tall Apprentice sighed, slumping against the wall with relief. "Blazes, I've searched half the city looking for you, Seires." The ovinutrix cocked her head quizzically. "Why would that be?" "The little microraptor, Brightfeather. She's supposed to be calming down a wounded skybax. I wasn't there, but I guess that a blue skybax came screaming out of nowhere, all beat up. Highsoar, you know, the big one without a partner, started speaking, plain as day. Well, kinda. I guess the blue one got attacked by some of the wild pterosaurs. Gavyn was tending to the hurt skybax when your friend landed in the midst of it all. He asked Brightfeather to stay and calm down the blue skybax, and no one seems to understand what Brightfeather says unless she uses a sandbox. She wrote that you can understand and translate for her, so I went to find you. Phew!" Seires digested all the information for a moment. "I'd be pleased to help out Brightfeather - I owe her a favor. Did you know my sister has a hatchling? Little Brightfeather traveled all the way from Treetown to tell me." She paused, then opened her beak in a wicked grin. "Besides, perhaps I can help you with Gavyn." The black-haired Apprentice flushed a brilliant scarlet. "Don't you dare! I'll manage to talk to him on my own... Eventually." Seires's knowing glance said it all. "Hmm... Are you going to talk Alpenglow into faking an injury again? He can do better then a sprained wrist. Your skybax is a born actor." Shazrad aimed a halfhearted cuff at the ovinutrix. "That was real. At least, I think it was... Anyhow, let's get to the barn."

(OOC: Does Gavyn have a secret admirer? Hmm... Could be interesting. He's a studious type, Gavyn is, but don't worry, Rix, he can be easily distracted... )
Connor dropped the microraptor unceremoniously on the floor and hissed in pain. Brightfeather landed unhurt, but still took up a defensive stance, unsure of what the stupid human might do. A little ways away, Cloudrunner cawed in laughter.
“Oh shut up,” Connor growled, examining his injury. “No one asked you, Airhead.” Cloudrunner snorted indignantly. Connor shook his hand a few times and glared at Brightfeather. “Cheeky little critter, aren't you?” He crouched down to her level and she spread her wings, menacingly, chittering at him. He chuckled. “If I didn't know better, I'd say those were fighting words...” He reached a hand out towards her again.
Suddenly, he knew that something was towering over him. Looking up, his eyes grew wide as saucers as he gazed into the furious visage of a blue Skybax. “Mary, Mother of...” The rest of his oath was swallowed up by the furious screech of an angry Skybax. Connor fell on his rear and crabwalked backwards away from the angry creature who stood protectively over the little dinobird, glaring at him ferociously. He backed himself into a bale of hay and found himself trapped; still in the range of the 'Bax's sharp beak. For the moment, Connor thought the safest thing to do was simply not to move... ---,--'--(@ Shazrad and Seires had managed to make it back to the Rookery in time to hear a piercing shriek. The Apprentice Rider recognized it immediately as a cry of anger directed at an attacker or antagonist. Seires noticed it simply as something unusual. Shazrad's brow furrowed. “There's definitely trouble. It's coming from the barn!” The two femmes sprinted toward the cause of the raucous. ---,--'--(@ Gavyn had sat down at his desk in his room and had just begun to record the day's events in his personal journal when a loud screech interrupted him. Already his acute ears matched the call to the newcomer Skybax. He launched himself out of his chair, knocking it to the ground, and rushed out the door, making a beeline for the barn. But as he rounded a corner, he collided with someone and staggered backwards. The other figure fell to the ground. The woman grunted as she hit the floor, hard. Gavyn immediately kneeled next to her and helped her up. “I'm terribly sorry, ma'am...” Suddenly, he recognized her as one of the individuals who had helped bring the blue Skybax into the barn. He wracked his brain for her name. “Shazrad?” He knew he'd got it right when she looked up at him. Her eyes widened in surprise as she stared at him, color slowly rising to her cheeks. “Are you alright?” he asked her. “Are you hurt?” Shazrad's mouth was open slightly in shock and she nodded then shook her head in reply to his questions, unable to look away from him. He was holding her shoulders lightly, making sure she was steady on her feet. He looked down at her and gave a slightly confused smile. “Well, then, if you'll excuse me... I... uh... have something to tend to.” He stepped past her and continued his run towards the barn. Shazrad watched him leave, not hearing the Ovinutrix's approach. “Really smooth there, Shazrad,” she said, sarcastically. “You really got his attention all right. Very graceful...” (Rix, if this wasn't how you wanted their first 'meeting' to be, let me know and I'll change it. Just give me an idea of what you do want. Also, sorry for a little character control, but it was necessary. If it's too ooc, give me your version of what it should be and I'll change it. Plus, feel free to control Gavyn any time you like... ;D)

((OOC - Nah, if he's busy being a studious boy, it's a lot funnier. How else does one torment characters?;D Gives me a chance to stretch my writing muscles. Most of my characters are pretty asexual, so thwarting Shazrad's romantic urges is an interesting change. Feel free to mess around with Shazrad, Alpenglow and Seires - Brightfeather, too, though to a lesser extent. Shazrad is supposed to be tough, very much a tomboy, and the sort of person who joins the other Apprentices on hairbrained plots and gives out friendly shoulder punches to male and female cronies alike. She's very open and friendly, and usually has no trouble talking to people. Gavyn, clearly, is the exception to the rule. Alpenglow's a lot like Shazrad, but more inclined to mischief. Seires is polite and formal with strangers, but has no trouble teasing her friends.)) Brightfeather's light weight made the fall no problem. She landed on her feet without needing to spread her wings. However, being dropped had cheesed her off further. She spread out her front arms, but this was a different sort of pose than her usual shrug. She drew herself up to full height and exposed her own minuscule version of the dromaesaurid "killer claw" on her feet. The claws of her front limbs were spread out to their full extent. All of her feathers bristled furiously. While Brightfeather was small, 72 cm including her tail, more than half her body, she was still an adult dromaesaurid. The loud noisy man bent down, and she considered jumping onto his head and ripping out some hair. Apparently being around only the giants made people forget how to treat the little ones. Either that, or he though she was as stupid as the Dimorphodon pterosaurs. Adding that to the fact that Brightfeather was convinced they were disturbing her charge, and she was not a happy little raptor. Her eyes glared bloody homicide, and her usual chitter was undercut with tones that, in a bigger theropod, would be described as a growl. "Hey, stupid, you think I'm a toy or a pet? You want to see what my claws can do to your thick, ugly skull?" Well, he hadn't got the hint the first time... At that point, he reached out again. Brightfeather was outraged. She was about to pounce, and give the doctor even more stitching to do, when a shadow loomed over her. It was her charge. Even the usually fearless Brightfeather felt a chill. Safyre was scary. The skybax backed Connor into the hay, and Brightfeather was suddenly concerned. He may be a jerk, but Safyre's eyes had more than a touch of murder. The blue pterosaur, given her recent experiences, was none too fond of bullies. The other two skybax were already turning, but they were too far away to help, and skybax were fairly ungainly on the ground. Cloudrunner shrieked an outraged challenge; perhaps he and Connor quarreled, but they were still friends and partners. Brightfeather was sick of today already. However, she wasn't about to let the man be run through by that wicked beak. She roared (okay, cheeped loudly) and hopped on his chest, interposing herself between the pointy end of an unpredictable, irate giant pterosaur and the really annoying, grabby guy. It was not one of her more pleasant days. To add insult to injury, her stomach chose that moment to announce that it was still pretty empty with a gurgle. ***** Shazrad had seen fights before. Alpenglow was, unfortunately, a little too pugnacious. He was as big for a male quetzacoatlus as Shazrad was for a human female - well above average, though not huge. The indomitable, tough apprentice matched well with her big, playful partner, and there hadn't been anything that had been beyond their grasp... Up until the point Shazrad became smitten with Gavyn, and lost control of her mouth in his presence. The big girl knew the noise, and, as soon as she heard the shriek from Safyre, took off at full speed. "There's definitely trouble. It's coming from the barn!" Her muscles were strong from years of training, and Seires was hard pressed to keep up. As Shazrad ran, she bellowed "ALP!" There was an off chance her partner was within hearing range. She might need him. For all the fights Alpenglow had been in, he had broken up as many. In mid-stride, she hit the corner of the barn, and ran straight into something unyielding. Shazrad, like all of the Apprentices, was good at this falling thing. Before her mind even registered what she'd hit, she'd twisted, hitting the ground shoulder first. She grunted as the air was knocked out of her, but suffered no worse damage. Before she could get the air back in her lungs, someone was helping her to her feet. As soon as she heard the voice, a dark, terrible suspicion formed in her head. Nah. My luck isn't that bad. Then she heard her name, and as she turned to look at the man she'd bumped into, she realized that the universe had a nasty sense of humor. She could feel her cheeks turning crimson again. &@$%!!!!#&@%! It didn't help to be reminded that she was almost as tall as him. "Are you all right? Are you hurt?" Shazrad tried to dragoon her mouth into obedience, and failed miserably. She managed a nod, then a head shake (she hoped). She would have given anything at that point to faint, or otherwise look in need of the good doctor's help. Instead, her treacherous, healthy body stayed upright. Gavyn smiled, in a rather baffled manner, but her knees refused to buckle in the appropriate style. "Well, then, if you'll excuse me... I... uh... have something to tend to." He bolted off. Even given the trouble in the barn, it took Shazrad a moment to collect herself. By that time, Seires had caught up. “Really smooth there, Shazrad,” she said, sarcastically. “You really got his attention all right. Very graceful...” Shazrad shot her friend a look that should have left her a smoking pile of ash, but, as had already been proven, there was no justice in the universe. At that point, she heard a familiar cry from a distance. Alpenglow was on his way. The sound of her partner jolted her into action. She took off in an out and out sprint. She managed to overtake Gavyn, years of hard training in evidence again, but knew better than to look at him. That was asking to run into a wall. The big woman flung the door open, and froze as she saw the tableau inside. Her friend, Connor, was pinned by the strange blue pterosaur, with Brightfeather standing on his chest. Shazrad and Connor had begun training at the same time; they had been friendly competitors throughout. Occasionally, their easy rivalry sparked arguements, and they certainly had their differences, but Connor and Shazrad enjoyed verbal sparring and each other's company. The same was not true of Alpenglow and Cloudrunner, who despised each other and had gotten in several fights. Gavyn and Seires stopped behind her. Any sudden movements risked setting off Safyre. ***** Alpenglow was disgusted to find the barn was off limits. He had been looking forward to its comforts, but now it had been comandeered for an injured skybax. From the rumors, he had been able to discover that it was a female who was a stanger to the Rookery. There had even been reports of her being blue, but that was probably false. He glided, conserving energy and coasting from thermal to thermal. He closed his eyes, savoring the last sunlight of the dying day. At that point, he was rudely disturbed from his rapture by Shazrad's shout. "ALP!" She sounded out of breath and spooked. He folded his wings and dove towards the sound of his companion's voice, but the barn was a good distance from his current position. ((Thought - it might be interesting to have a confrontation with the Untamed further on... Alpenglow would like that.))

Safyre wasn't the violent type. She was more concerned with intimidation than actually hurting someone, but the events of the past day had stretched her emotions to their limits. She wouldn't hurt the human, but that didn't mean she couldn't scare him.
When Brightfeather jumped between them, Safyre paused. The little Microraptor had been nothing but kind to her in her time of need, and to see her defending the annoying human confused Safyre to no end. She gave a confused little squawk and backed off, but Cloudrunner wouldn't let her get away with the threat.
He had quickly ambled over and also stood between Safyre and Connor, hissing menacingly. Safyre responded by spreading her wings as wide as she could, making her look almost three times as big as normal, but Cloudrunner wouldn't back down. The almost wild skybax was ready to defend herself, and things were starting to look ugly.
---,--'--(@
Gavyn watched Shazrad sprint past him. He wasn't a quick runner himself, but so far, he could out-distant any human he'd encountered here at the Rookery. When they made it to the barn, Gavyn was dismayed at the sight that met him. The blue Skybax and Cloudrunner were squaring off. These confrontations were getting annoying, and quite disturbing to the other residents of the Rookery.
Instinct sent him leaping to the side as another skybax landed nearby. Unfortunately, his leap sent him straight into Shazrad, who was also staring at the confrontation. Again he collided with her, but this time gripped her arm gently and moved her to the side as well. “Sorry,” he mumbled, still eyeing the two combatants. Alpenglow chuckled softly to himself, casting a mischievous glance at Shazrad.
The fun was cut short when Safyre attacked Cloudrunner. Thesmaller female skybax was quicker than Cloudrunner, but he was more adept to getting out of difficult situations. He dodged and retaliated.
Gavyn sprinted forward and years of training caused his muscles to move even before he had time to think. In a few steps, he was beside Safyre. One arm shot out and wrapped around her beak, drawing it in close to her chest. The other wrapped around her neck, strengthening the incapacitating, yet harmless hold. Safyre's wings fluttered wildly as she struggled to break free from the human's grasp. Her fingers managed a quick grab on his shoulder, but he shifted and her claws sliced through his shirt, leaving three shallow cuts on his shoulder. He hissed a little in pain, but maintained his grip.
“Connor!” he called out, “Get your skybax away from here now!” Connor scrambled to his feet and complied, moving Cloudrunner away. Gavyn continued to hold Safyre, his strong arms straining against the powerful pterosaur. He hushed her, and whispered to her, calming her with his voice.
“Easy there, sweetheart, no one's going to hurt you. Just calm down. Relax. It's over now.” He continued his steady stream of conversation until Safyre finally calmed under his grasp. Gently, he released her, and stroked her head soothingly. Quickly, Safyre became comfortable with his touch. She knew that this human would not hurt her.
A little ways away, Shazrad looked on with an almost jealous feeling burning in her heart as Gavyn gently held and caressed the nervous wild skybax. Connor sauntered over and put an arm around her shoulders.
“Well, that was fun. Did you miss me?”
Shazrad raised an eyerow. “It did seem a little quieter around here,” she replied, drily.
Connor laughed. “I knew you'd miss me! I feel so bad leaving you here by yourself with no man around to protect you.” He leaned over and gave her a good-natured kiss on the cheek.
It seemed that the universe really did have a cruel sense of humor. For at the moment of Connor's action, Gavyn appeared in front of them. His furious gaze turned to Connor.
“I don't know what happened, but I suggest you learn to control your skybax a little better. If i've told you once, I've told you a thousand times not to disturb my patients.”
Connor's eyes sparkled as he gave Sazrad's shoulder a squeeze. “I'll remember that, Gav. Sorry.”
Gavyn's eyes flicked over to Shazrad and he smiled, although it didn't quite seem to reach his eyes. He gave a brief nod to her before turning and leaving, cradling his injured shoulder.
(OOC: Oh don't worry, there will be plenty of confrontations later on. I just want everyone to meet everyone first. It also seems that Connor's got a knack for causing awkward situations. He really IS ornery, isn't he? ;D)

For the second time today, Brightfeather took to the air to avoid being trampled. She landed in the rafters and stayed there, scolding the skybax rapidly. They stomped about, displaying at each other, and Brightfeather felt more than a little sulky. Sometimes, being a diminutive dromaesaurid was no fun. **** Alpenglow tried to be a well behaved skybax; he just didn't try very hard. He saw a perfect opportunity, and the big red skybax took it without a second thought. He deliberately landed almost on Gavyn's head, forcing the tall man to dodge away. As Alpenglow lined his landing up well, he made a collision inevitable. Alp was far from naive; he knew perfectly well that his Shazrad had a huge crush on Gavyn, and he was willing to help his partner get a chance to talk to the doctor. For one thing, the wrist sprain had been pure invention on his part. He clacked his great beak, laughing. ***** Shazrad was about to intercede in the confrontation, when Gavyn rammed into her. Once again, the collision surprised her, and she nearly landed on her tail. Fortunately, he had a hold of her arm. Shazrad opened her mouth, about to thank him or something, when a shriek rang out. Cloudrunner and Safyre were at it. Alpenglow brushed past her, though it was anyone's guess whether he was planning on breaking up the fight or helping Safyre pummel Cloudrunner. He also neatly blocked Shazrad's attempts to help. Before either of them was able to interfere, the fight was over. Safyre was calming, Brightfeather was fluttering down from the rafters, and Connor and Cloudrunner were both in one piece. Shazrad saw Gavyn focusing on the strange skybax, pouring his heart and soul into calming Safyre. Great. I'm bloody jealous of a skybax. Shazrad was not enamored with her looks. She was too tall, with the lean, spare build of a rider. Her muscles, while powerful, were ropy. She was not beautiful, striking only in her height and strength. As though Alpenglow could sense his partner's distress, he turned back, butting her hand with his beak. The black-haired Apprentice stroked the soft, warm, sparse fur along his neck. No matter how bad she felt, Alp always made it better. At that point, Alpenglow ceased thrumming to hiss loudly at Cloudrunner, and Shazrad sighed. Somethings would never change. She pinched his neck warningly, and her partner shut his beak, though he cast her a look that was half aggrieved and half humorous. At that point, Connor ambled over and put his arm around her neck, unflappable as ever. They were the same height, and it was an easy, companionable gesture. Skybax riders were hard to shake up. “Well, that was fun. Did you miss me?” Shazrad raised an eyebrow. “It did seem a little quieter around here,” she replied, dryly. For one thing, she'd had all the hard patrols to herself, since she and Connor were among the best in their year. Connor laughed. “I knew you'd miss me! I feel so bad leaving you here by yourself with no man around to protect you.” He leaned over and gave her a good-natured kiss on the cheek. Alpenglow hissed again, this time with an obvious edge of humor in his voice. The big pterosaur liked Connor better than his mount. Shazrad rolled her eyes and laughed. Gavyn chose that particular moment to show up, which had the usual effect of short circuiting the grey-eyed woman's brain. Okay, he's bawling out Connor.... So gorgeous... Oh #@&*^! He's looking at me... Smile! Come on, lips, you can do it! Of course, by that time, Gavyn had turned away. Shazrad sighed, staring after him. Connor looked questioningly at his friend. "You've got it bad, don't you?" "I'm fine," Shazrad protested, but her voice sounded hollow. "So, how was your Rainy Basin sweep?" Connor shrugged nonchalantly. "A breeze. We were supposed to be running distraction for a convoy, but it so happened that our convoy was led by the biggest Apatosaurus you've ever seen, and she knew exactly what she was doing. Cloud and I didn't need to stick our necks out at all." Shazrad wasn't paying attention. She was thinking about Gavyn. "Do you suppose he needs help with that scratch?" "Shaz, he's a doctor. Don't be an idiot. Besides, you just want to see him with his shirt off, don't you?" Shazrad broke into a wide grin suddenly, a wicked light flashing in her eyes. "Maybe..." Then her expression changed, and she continued wistfully, "But Alp and I are supposed to go on the moonlight patrol in an hour, and I need to get my saddle cleaned up first." ***** Brightfeather, in the meantime, was explaining as much of the situation to Seires as she could. "Oh, and make sure the idiot knows that I'm just as smart as he is, and I don't like being grabbed." She paused, looking up. There was Alpenglow, his head cocked to one side. The big skybax whistled curiously. Alpenglow had never encountered a dinobird before. The tiny feathered creature fascinated him, especially the shiny feathers on her tail. He wanted one, badly, but even Alp was too well mannered to go for her tail feathers. He held out his hand, and Brightfeather brusquely returned the gesture. Her fingers were very long for her size, and the claws tipping them were clearly more dangerous than Alpenglow's handclaws, at least speaking proportionately. She burbled brightly at him, and he cooed in response. Then he looked up and saw Safyre. She looked confused and a little lost in Gavyn's absence, and, in the flood of activity in the barn, a little nervous. He was reminded of his own little sister. Besides, Cloudrunner didn't like her, and that was a point in her favor in Alpenglow's eyes. Speaking of which... Oh. Cloudrunner had moved nearer to his rider, protectively. The two male skybax traded glares. Alp tossed his head, displaying the size of his lethal beak. He deliberately turned his back to Cloudrunner, and moved towards the female skybax. She was about average size, but the real striking thing was her color. Well, the rumors were right after all. "So, what happened? Who else went after you?" he cawed. Alpenglow's voice was loud. He seldom bothered with subtlety. **** Seires trotted over to Connor and tapped politely on his sleeve. "Excuse me," she said diffidently. "My friend, Brightfeather, would like to inform you that you're an idiot, that she's as smart as you, and that she doesn't like being grabbed. She also wished me to tell you that next time you pick her up without express permission, she will bite your finger as hard as she can, and use her claws." Behind Seires, Brightfeather glared at him, then gaped her little, toothy mouth into a grin and held out her hand, then chattered rapidly. "She also says she'll call pax, if you promise not to grab and treat her like an intelligent creature, not a toy or pet." Brightfeather was far too good-natured to stay angry. Besides, this kind of thing happened more often than one would suppose. Most of the pterosaurs that were her size were as dull as ditchwater, and essentially dumb animals. They didn't mind being manhandled. People tended to make the same assumption about Microraptors. Besides, Brightfeather wasn't one for grudges. She cocked her head, bright eyes studying the pair of humans curiously.

Gavyn walked distractedly down the hallway back to his room. The events of the past day had exhausted him. And adding to the fact that his shoulder was sore and bleeding didn't help to lighten the dark feeling that settled over him. He knew it wasn't the wild skybax's fault; she was simply trying to protect herself.
He just couldn't quite seem to place why he felt this way. An unnatural anger had built up inside him, and it was directed at Connor.
Both of them being Irishmen, Gavyn and Connor had been close friends since childhood. They both shared a love for pterosaurs, particularly skybaxes, and this fueled their friendship. They had parted ways for several years, Connor going on to learn to be a Rider, and Gavyn learning to heal, but met up by chance in Waterfall City nearly 5 years ago. Connor had told him about the Rookery, and Gavyn agreed to go there as soon as he finished his training.
Gavyn entered his room and sat down near his mirror. He stripped his shirt off and examined his wounded shoulder, finding the injury not at all serious. He treated the cuts and applied a light bandage. He stayed at the desk and tried to write in his journal, but his mind refused to concentrate. The anger was still burning inside of him, and he knew he'd have to find its epicenter and confront it.
During their days in Waterfall City, Connor had helped Gavyn pursue the affections of a beautiful woman. He still had a year of medical training to go, when he received word that he would have to leave Waterfall City, and finish the schooling elsewhere. He asked her to wait for him, and when he was finished, he would return. However, she had broken his heart when she declared that she would not wait for him to finish his schooling. Since then, Connor had stayed out of his personal life as far as that was concerned, and Gavyn delved whole-heartedly into his studies in an attempt to shield himself from the pain. He no longer sought the attention of a female companion, believing that if Fate would allow it, she would come to him.
That belief was somewhat shaken when he came ot the Rookery and first saw Shazrad. In his eyes, she was beautiful. Tall, lithe, and strong, her eyes sparkled with mischief and humor at almost everything. Her face lit up when she laughed, and she seemed to get along with everyone. Everyone, that is, except him.
He'd tried to get to know her, but the responses to all their encounters was a nod or shake of the head on her part, and she never seemed quite as friendly around him as she did around the other Riders. Slowly, he was getting the impression that she disliked him, and he wanted to spare himself from the pain of another rejection.
The earlier incident between her and Connor seemed to solidify his feeling that the two would soon be a match for each other. There, he confronted it. Now he could move on. He felt a momentary cold twinge of jealousy, but quickly stifled it. Opening his medical journals, he once again lost himself in his work.
---,--'--(@
Connor frowned at Shazrad. “You really should talk to him, Shaz. You know, each time you let him walk away, the chasm between you grows ever wider and more difficult to cross.”
Shazrad blinked in surprise. It was one of the rare times that Connor was actually serious, but when he was, it was always some piece of advice to heed.
At that moment, however, Seires relayed Brightfeather's message about Connor being an idiot. Shaz couldn't help but giggle at that. Connor crouched down and touched his hand to the little dinobird's claw.
“I'm sorry, Brightfeather. I promise I'll try not to be so impudent anymore.” His eyes twinkled. “No guarantees though...”
He stood back and faced Shazrad, wagging his finger in her face. His eyes held a maturity and sense of wisdom that she had never seen there before.“Now you remember what I said, Shaz. You don't know him like I do, and I care about our friendship far too much to let anyone hurt him again.” With that, he turned away and he and Cloudrunner left the barn to settle in for the night.
---,--'--(@
Safyre shrank away from the large male Skybax that had approached. Her body trembled from pain, exhaustion, and adrenaline, and she could barely stand upright. She started when he spoke to her.
“So, what happened? Who else went after you?”
It certainly wasn't what Safyre was expecting. She was thinking that he was going to poke fun at her because of her odd coloration as well, but if he noticed it, he seemed to ignore it.
“The Untamed,” she replied, softly and shyly. “Bullies they are. They drove me from my home and attacked me. Their leader, Nightwing, is dangerous. He was the one who hurt me.”
Alpenglow whistled sadly. “I'm sorry.” He studied her for a moment, and Safyre seemed to shy away from his gaze. “What's your name?” he asked her.
“Safyre,” she replied.
“Your name fits. I'm Alpenglow. And the human female over there is my partner, Shazrad. She helped bring you in here when you were unconscious.”
Safyre looked him in the eye for the first time, and Alpenglow saw that her eye color was different too. Her eyes were such a light blue, that they seemed almost white in some respects. She regarded him for a moment, then looked away, her head bowing in a submissive way. She was shy to a debilitating fault.
“Then you have my gratitude,” she said, quietly.
(OOC: Hmm... Looks like there's more depth to Gavyn than originally thought. Could make for some good drama, I think. Also, if Shaz and Alp are going flying, they just might encounter a member of the Untamed. ;)Maybe... Depends on where they fly...[and also the fact that you may want them to meet one. You may or may not, so I'll leave the option and the character up to you.])
