Walt Whitman wanted to be a famous poet in his time. It didn't happen. However, history has been good to him. Admiration for his work has increased over the years. Today, he is often described as the ultimate American Transcendentalist. Here's several versions of his Leaves of Grass. I suggest that you don't bother with the versions that have his Civil War poems in there. From what I hear, they're not his best. Leaves of GrassEnjoy and discuss. - Aric
