I'm writing Kaak and Altanden's meeting story, which is starting to unfold over years now. I was trying to think of all the ways a skybax and rider could get together.
I figured there was always the 'love at first sight' sort of thing, where eyes meet and then everybody knows it's to be. Or the one notices the other and has to end up asking. Angst! :D What other ways? Assigned to a project together, maybe?
Kaak: "What's a really good, non-Marine specific quote about life? Something about meeting despair and working past it? Keeping faith in the little things? Standing up to the world and being triumphant?" JDH: "You know, I should probably get some food." Kaak: "That's it."
Maybe I'm just a hopeless romantic, but I rather like the "love-at-first-sight" idea. However, from what Will says about his initial relationship with Cirrus in ALAFT, I get the feeling that they're just paired up, and they have to learn how to get along. I guess Oolu knows who's right for each other?
"Wisest is she who knows she does not know." -Good old Socrates.
How can Peter Piper pick a peck of pickled peppers, if pickled peppers are peppers that have already been picked and pickled?
Love at first sight is a bit too unpredictable I think... Oolu probably observes the new students for a while then makes an educated guess at who can get along with who. He could indeed give them all sorts of tasks to help him make the decision.
Then again most people think I am completely a-romantic because I like to apply logic everywhere.
Well, it wasn't exactly "love at first sight" with me and Greg. We've just been dating for a long time and have grown very, very close to each other. I don't believe love at first sight lasts; it's more of an infatuation rather than something deeper. I think that the way a skybax is chosen for a rider may have more to do with the riders and skybax's tempraments. Maybe the riders have to help take care of all of the skybax and they find one they are comfortable working with, then the partnership is formed.
