Well, it's official: I've finally graduated college with a B.S. in Social Science. The irony here, of course, is that I've never been overly fond of people (my attitude generally ranges from apathy to disgust) and I only ended up on this track due to some odd circumstances (which basically amounted to do this degree or don't go to school at all) but it's been a fun four years and even though my heart has always been with biology and the "natural" sciences, this foray into the other side of the academic coin has been quite an eye opener, exposing both how natural and social scientists think as well as how they view each other. The net step, of course, is to continue working my technical job (which has nothing to do with either science) and go back to school in the spring for a B.S. in Biology, continuing on the track I wanted to do to begin with. I hope to use this fusion of knowledge to help humanity in ways that niether side can accomplish alone. Or purge it from the planet. Haven't quite decided. Crossposted to my LJ.

If I had a say in it, I'd throw my votes in on the whole purging thing. If you decide to go with that, you know where to find me if you want some help.
oh, and congratulations on your graduation! ^_^ Put that B*****d Scorching degree to good use!

Congrats, Quickstride!! Good luck on deciding. Hmmm... I'd think really hard about that whole purging thing.

Hey, thanks! I'm a bit more partial to purging myself, but let's face it, I'm really just too lazy. ;D

CONGRATS! You graduated before me;) I can't say I'm done with school yet, but I've only got until next June and I'll have my Masters.
Go for Bio! You'll be sorry if you don't! That and Vorchia will have someone who truly understands all of those wonderfully scientific terms;)

I'll have my bachelor by July 2008...
Hey Az, does anything I say trough PM get trough or are you just that busy? You have been impossibly quiet. Just checking... And yes few people understand the lovely scientific terms. I 'scared' your boyfriend yesterday by trying to tell him about my most recent labclass results. He said he was more into computers. (G-e-e-k!! jkjk) Labclass from 0900 to 16:30 is too much of a good thing though, even for me. ESPECIALLY when the results don't come out right. Grrr. Its fun... When it works...

Hey, a Master's is better than my B.S., so you still beat me.
And my return to the classroom has been postponed a semester due to some (positive) job changes, but I still plan on going back next fall (it should be easier to start then, anyway.)

Congrats. I'm curious here....what does one do with a degree in social science? You could teach history or sociology if that's the path you choose.

Congrats. I'm curious here....what does one do with a degree in social science? You could teach history or sociology if that's the path you choose. Thanks! To answer your question: Not much. History and sociology are possible paths, as are anthropology, political science and psychology, but social science is a broad degree and I'd imagine that one would have to go into a more specific graduate program to make a viable career out of any of them. Most of the alumni I know of went on to become social workers or work at law firms. Personally, while I enjoy history and psychology I overall dislike people (which made things pretty awkward within my degree program- I basically went with it because financial considerations left me with the options of doing this or not going to college at all) so I'm probably not going to do much with this degree beyond use what I've learned to more effectively pursue other goals.
