For all those who love to examine the world and the way the people of it respnd to disasters (or don't), then you should consider reading this book.
Aric mailed it to me as a Halloween gift and at first I was a little reluctant to raed it because it was about Zombies...hence the Halloween gift. I mean, I have never been a fan of scary movies, ( I am a baby who needs the lights on and someone to watch it with) But I felt guilty for not having read the last book he sent me (sorry Aric!) so I made an effort to read this one....I am HOOKED!
Max Brooks writes this book as if a Zombie invavsion has already taken place and the whole book is nothing but interviews from people after the world wide war against the "undead" after the hardest part of it. He has "interviewed" everybody from the common farmer to the high ranking military commanders and politicians for there stories of the war and their take on the actions and responses of groups and individuals before, during, and after.
The depth and scope of his understanding of teh nature of man in this book left me breathless at times. I actually commited a "book sin" and grabbed a pen and started writing notes to myself in the margins and my reactions to what i read. As I read it, I treated each interview as a seperate short story and stopped afterwards to think about it and reflect on what i thought. Unfortunately, I have to agree with many of the "interviews" that he "recorded" in the fact that there would be much finger-pointing and blame thropwing. There would be many incidents of royal screw ups and way to many lives needlessly lost. But he also showed the flip side of the coin ans shared experiences of the everyday heros, the one man or woman who silently stood up and said, "You shall Not pass".
He wrote about experiences of people all over the world and showed the exploiters, the idiots, the brave souls, the martyrs, the, corrupt politicians, the reformed bad guys, hardened military, you name it, he portrayed it. This book is a serious kick in the behind and a wakeup call for the big, "What If?" It could happen, it could not, it could be applied to any kind of global disaster...but What If?
Thanks Aric for a book that fully caught my attention and gripped me enough to make me feel alive in the midst of RL.
