I have been unable to do much reading lately, but this book got me right where it counts. It is by Jay Kopelman. This is a story of a U.S. Marine who finds an orphan puppy inside a bombed out house in Fallujah. The story follows the Marines attempts to rescue Lava, the puppy, and transport him to the US during the war. This is a true story about one man's struggle to find something good in the middle of a war zone that not only shows the story of Lava, but at the same time documents the daily horrific events associated at the time. An example might be, "Lava chewed a marine's only pair of socks today while a car bomb went offf on the other side of the city, killing 10 and injuring 27 more." The book is primarily about rescuing Lava, but it offers a unique perspective on how homesick military personnel deal with the hard facts of life everyday and try to make some sense of why they do what they do. There are a few disturbing sections but nothing really graphic. It is really a wonderful book and should be read. Enjoy.
