I think I've read it four times already. The first time its a pain in the butt and hard to go through. The second time it still is, the third time its nice and the fourth time you start to actually LIKE Tolkien's obsession with descriptions and language. *sigh* I'll never be able to keep up with all those characters. I swear the man took pleasure in giving everyone similar names and sometimes even reusing names. Liiiiiiiiiiike, there's a Haldir who is a high ranked human at one point, there's also Haldir the march warden of Lothlorien.
Lothlorien cannot be abbreviated as 'Lorien' because 'Lorien' is a place in Valinor where Melian the Maia dwells. Melian the Maia is of divine race, married to an elf and the mother of Luthien, which explains why Luthien has certain magical powers as well as mythical beauty.
Luthien, alas would nowadays be called a 'Mary Sue' but don't let the Tolkien purists hear it or they shall have my neck.
Anyhow, in short, Tolkien lets the world (universe?) be created through music. There is a one god (obvious Christian influence) called Illuvatar, or Eru. He has this large choir of beings who will make music and from that music's three themes the world gets created. Seven 'female' and seven 'male' divine beings become the 'Valar' and the 'Valier' (queens of the valar, female form of the word 'valar) who get to put the finishing touches to the world just made, like, plants, seas, animal, etc but only Illuvatar himself is allowed to create sentienent beings on the planet 'middle earth' or 'arda'.
The Valar create paradise on earth, which is known as 'the spring of arda' but it all ends up destroyed by the dischord of Melkor. Now Melkor is a divine being much like the Valar who already during the great music of creation would cause a dischord because he had the desire to outdo everyone else...
You know explaining the Silmarillion would take me as much words as are IN the Silmarillion?? Just read it people. Then come back and we'll talk about it ;D
