This last weekend our Jackson chameleon died. It was
very peaceful, he was sitting in his favorite sunning
spot- one moment he was breathing and next he wasn't.
He was a brillant blue-green color when he went, his
happy colors. Tamara(my girlfriend) and I sat and figured his age based on where we were living at the time and where we were each working. On one of my first
posts here I placed him at around eight years old, it
would seem I had short changed him a bit. He lived with
us for ten years and was full grown when we got him.
We called our vet to tell him and said the longest he
had ever heard of that species living was eleven years.
I am sad, but I know he had a good life. The following
is a poem I wrote based on a sculpture piece I am working on, but I feel it applies here also.
Perches atop spinal column
grand and dead as proper be
climb and higher still
imperative drums
vertebrae a ladder song
somewhere along the way
Death snaked
but climbs it still
At the bottom
bone skull base
spout a spinal tower proud
that little lizard did spy
a roost high atop the spire
The leg brains thought
like a steam train flash
sneaky and sly
the tail bent
that bone pile never had a chance
The climb is long until the top
simple machine lizard goes
along the way
Deaths caress
did little to slow numbskull
The spirit burns the flesh ahead
the limbs are twigs
a mummy's cape
wrapped tight to hold it in
almost there-
then take a rest
on its rightful throne
Majestic husk
held high atop
bones settle into place
upon its head great fetish dress
feathers sighing bloom
its place secure at last
How's it now-
the mummy's glow
with skin that screens
internal flicker
it coolly sits a garish crown
high top the black bone hill.

Never shall I forget
His humor
And his determination,
As he climbed across my computer case
To reach the Ficus tree.
Fortunate are those humans among us
Who truly see these gentle companions.
Fortunate am I to be friend
To one so insightful.
Months ago,
I felt I knew him
From your words
Posted in this public place.
And your words exposed your heart
And I saw you.
I thank Jackson
For helping me to see a remarkable person
And for sharing his friend.

After submitting the reply above, I went downstairs to check on our pregnant guinea pig... and discovered she'd had four babies. Three alive, and one stillborn. I won't attempt to interpret that, just to pass it along...

The passing of a friend
Reminds us of our awe
At how this wonderful creature
Made us all delight in its core
The passing of a friend
Binds us together even stronger
Rummaging through the memories
We are filled with bellowing laughter
The passing of a friend
One who was dear in all
Makes us smile
at its final encore.
