This morning
Fall began
The First Leaf
found me
lying in wait
a lure
from some
subterranean angler fish
I stopped
to locate it amongst the others
As my fingers
curled round
nostrils flared
with the ancient tease
of wood smoke and turned earth
The contract entered
the world shuddered
a torn sprocket hole
as shadows lengthened
I held my trigger Leaf
between thumb and forefinger
rolling the stem
to spin the world
all around me
the Trees opened
to welcome the season’s own
Through my eyes
it takes on a sepia
of crows and trains
Soon
the Pumpkin Men will arrive
carrying their offerings
eagerly received
The peeling backdrops
and painted scenery
are roped to the rafters
allowing Autumn
to lay claim
to hearts
and minds
and hungers
I walk through
this calliope of season
with eyes grinning
and spirit smoldering.

Thanks for the kind words Leafers- some poems just sorta write themselves, this one being that type. Fall is my favorite season- the leaf triggering device is a very real sensation for me- I can pinpoint the exact moment the season changes over (for me). When it does, everything becomes more than it was before- smells are sharper, shadows seem deeper and light wavers and flickers in a most odd fashion. And before you ask- this is without the assistance of drugs, thank you. I do so enjoy the Fall...

Hate Autumn??? You know I was about to say which one was my favourite, but I love them all equally. I mean Summer - ah, lounging in the sun while your brain frizzles and your whole body seems to slow down - I always feel like a lizard then, even though the poor thing would probably be dead if it did that in that heat. Plus i love the tropical rain storms. Spring - green grass, rain! wind and cool sunny days, little buds of green appearing on the deeciduous dark branches and spring always smells so nice n' fresh. Autumn, justwhat Snipe said if I was in the northern hemisphere I really love the reds and oranges and the sweet smell of decay of the forest litter floor, plus i like the cool nippy wind and again the smell! Winter... I yern for snow!!!! I really miss snow out here. Winters cool because everything is frozen and quiet, rain is brilliant and freezing wind whipping your face reminds you your alive.. ah then there's retreating into your house to warm up. Lovely jubley! Anyway I kinda strayed off post... Lol.
