Dakota and Noetia's training began the very next day. The very first lesson was Getting used to Telepathy. Dakota would send a message to Noetia thatonly she would know, and Noetia would say it aloud to the Mentors. At first, it was awkward for the pair, and they would only catch a word or two in the entire sentence. Then, as they grew more comfortable, they would send entire paragraphs back and forth to each other, then images, then they would finally see through each other's eyes. The excercise took the entire day, then, afterwards, Noetia and Dakota would send mental images throughout the night, usually dreams or deep thoughts. ooc: That's all I have time for. Did you notice that we actually got to the second page? I didn't expect that... -Kendi

For most of the day Taliff sat on the perifery, listening to the explanations. He himself had developed his telepathy from trial and error and he knew he could not use it to the extent that the dragonet and her partner already were.
When evening came and the two were resting from their long day Taliff flew out of the temple courtyard and dove deep into the nearby lake. He looked around as he was down there, much as he had all those many years ago, seeing multitudes of changes wrought by the seasonal storms. That thought brought him back to the surface.
The storms. They were not too far away. Would the two be trained in flying together in them. Rarely did dragons go out in the torrential rain and winds of the storm but emergencies did happen. Taliff himself had flown in them though it took a lot of control and strength. He had reveled in it after a time of adjustment and getting used to the new winds and adjusting on a moments change. His first flight in them had scared him greatly, being tossed about like a mere hatchling.
Taliff took flight and returned to the courtyard and lay down there, looking up through the clear sky at the infinite number of stars above. He would ask the mentors about training in them the next morning, he decided. Before long he settled there in slumber.
((OOC: Eh. It doesn't take too much to get to page two so long as we kept it going. I like the way it is going. Hope you don't mind the idea about the storm flight training. Adds a little bit of danger later on if you like the idea. If the mentors say no, then no big deal.))

Dakota felt her heart tighten when the mentors announced that she would be learning how to fly in the seasonal storms that were rapidly approaching while Noetia trained in hand-to-hand combat. She was somewhat comforted by the fact that Master Ivory and, perhaps, Taliff, would be helping her so that she did not blow away in the feirce winds. However, it was the fact that she would soon be training with Noetia on her back that made her panic. The thought made her train diligently in the stronger currents while she anxiously awaited the storms' approach. Noetia would comfort her friend by keeping their minds connected while they trained. Noetia would learn the best ways to stay on Dakota's back and Dakota would learn how to best help her Rider in case of attack. The two were especially attentive, but they were always too exhausted at the end of the day to notice the large smiles on the mentors' faces as they ate dinner and went to bed.

Taliff and the two mentors sat outside in the evening light as the two young ones slept after their long day. "Do you think they will be ready for the storms?"
"Yes. They are strong flyers already and there is yet time before the storms arrive."
Taliff looked away, up at the sky where the stars were just beginning to show as the sunset faded to night. Finally after a moment's thought he looked down and looked back at the white dragon. "May i ask you a question, Ivory?"
"You may ask but i will not garuntee an answer without knowing the question."
Taliff smiled slightly. That was just the way he often answered that question then he grew serious again. "What ever happened to the human that was preparing to be joined with me? I mean, i know there weren't any other dragonets preparing to become guardians. What did he end up doing?"
Ivory though for a moment then spoke, "That i do not know. One moment." He turned his head and nudged his companion then repeated Taliff's question to him.
Master Vario looked up then spoke after a moment's thought in a tired voice. His days were long with training the young human and he did not have the endurance of the dragons. "He was . . . disappointed when he was told of your departure. He insisted though on being trained to be a warrior protector for his village. His life was extended by that training but not nearly what it would have been had he been joined to you. He is still the protector there. When the time comes and there is a dragonet ready he will be the one to chose his successor and train them while he yet lives."
"How old would he be?" Taliff forced himself to ask, guilt making his heart heavy.
"Nearly ninety, if i remember correctly. I have spoken with him not too long ago. He still looks like a man in his late forties."
Taliff looked away, once again gazing up at the stars. He knew how difficult the protectorship could sometimes be for a dragon/rider pair, infinitely more so for a lone human protector. He decided, then and there, that he would meet the man. Even if the man despised him for it. He knew that it would make him stronger and perhaps make the human stronger as well. It would have to wait though until after the young one was storm trained.
He looked back at the other dragon as he stretched his long white wings and Vario settled back against him once more. "So, how will we begin the storm training?"
"With the very first one. That way the winds will not be as strong yet and we can get an idea of her strength in them before the true great winds blow and whether or not she is ready for them."
"Yes. And if she is not, we can keep her grounded during them and have her truly reaady in a half a year when they return." Taliff stood and stretched his own wings. "I will see you in the morning, Ivory, Vario. I wish to swim before i sleep."
"We shall see you in the morning then. It has been a long day."
Taliff nodded then thrust himself into the sky. He looked at the temple and saw in the window of the room where the two trainees slept. They were both on the same platform, Neotia curled up against Dakota's side. With a slight smile he dove deep into the water and swam with more enjoyment than he had in a long while.
((OOC: Can you tell the mundanity of the training bores him a little bit? He is also regretting what he put the human that was to be his rider through. I am loving this.))
((Edited to Add: Nice long post, eh? Couldn't seem to stop myself this time.))

Dakota lifted into the sky, determination lighting up her violet eyes. She quickly went through the basic forms Master Ivory had taught her while waiting for the mentor to come out of the Temple. She was always awake before many others and appreciated the time to herself. Having gone through the basic forms, Dakota tried something that she still needed to work on. Something that was called a Corkscrew Dive. She rolled into position, giving a good kick-off to her Corkscrew. She consentrated hard on the maneuver, selecting the air currents with great care as she quickly approached the ground. This was the hard part, landing. Dakota tried to keep her nerves calm, but still rolled harshly on the dirt. She got up, shaking herself free of the dust, then took to the air again, positioning herself ready for another attempt at the difficult performance. "Try putting out your wings just before landing" said a voice below Dakota. The dragonet looked down and saw Taliff sitting below her. She considered his suggestion, planned her move, then began the exhilerating motion of free fall. Twisting and turning rapidly towards the ground, Dakota applied Taliff's suggestion and opened her wings just before she landed. She tripped a little from the impact of the fall, but she was on her feet. She grinned and looked towards Taliff, "Thank you, sir" she said Taliff nodded with a smile on his black face. Dakota turned towards the sound of footsteps and saw Noetia standing there with a gap as big as a dinner plate on her face. "That was awesome" she said, "How am I supposed to stay on?" "You will learn in time" said Master Vario as he approached, "But for now, we must retire to train seperately until Dakota is strong enough to whether the storm ahead" Noetia bowed and followed her mentor, turning to give Dakota a quick thumbs-up as she left. Dakota flicked her tongue contentedly, Neotia was a great friend to her.

"You learn quickly, young one. I think we shall not be disappointed in your preformance when the storms come," Taliff said. "Tell me, do you know why that little maneuver i told you about worked?"
Dakota considered for a moment then shook her head honetly. "No sir. I don't."
"As you are landing, you gain speed from the descent. Opening your wings catching the wind and slows you, also giving you just a little bit of lift so you land much more gracefully." Taliff lifted off and threw himself easily through so of the maneuvers that Dakota had been executing then corkscrewed towards the ground, doing two quick flips, one forward and one back, before snapping his wings open and landing easily without a hitch to it.
"Did you see it lift me slightly when i opened my wings?" Dakota nodded. "The wind from my dive, hitting my wings, gives me a little bit of lift at the last moment. It slows my descent and even reverses it slightly so that i can land much easier than hitting the ground and rolling."
"Try again. Practice can only make you better."
Dakota did so and landed much more gracefully this time. "I did it!" she said happily.
Taliff chuckled. "Of course. It is natural for our kind. Now try to mimic me." He took flight again with her behind him and began to run her through series after series of maneuvers, each having their own purpose in flight. She did her best to do as he did, though his experience was vastly greater than her own and she did well though some things were yet beyond her. When Taliff finally landed, Dakota was panting hard but smiling broadly.
"How did i do, sir? Did i do well?"
"Aye, you did quite well for your first time. I do believe that you will be ready for the storms."
"Are they bad, sir? I have heard stories and i wonder."
"They can be. Especially near the end when the true great winds blow but at the beginning, which is when you will be learning the basics of it, it is not too bad. A lot of judgement is necessary. That is why we work with you so much. We are trying to teach you that judgement before the real trials begin. Some day it may be necessary for you to fly in the midst of the winds on some emergency and we would not want something to happen to you or your rider because of lack of knowledge."
Dakota nodded, her face serious as she looked towards the temple where Neotia and Vario had disappeared.
((OOC: Hope i controlled her all right and didn't mess up. If you want anything changed, let me know.))

ooc: Right now, I have no idea where to go with this... Dakota felt the rain pelt her scaled face. The wind was not too bad, but bad enough to be a challenge to her small form. "Remember" Master Ivory reminded his pupil, "Jump first, and don't open your wings all at once, or they will tear in the wind" Dakota nodded to show that she had heard him, jumped, and opened her wings only a sliver. It took all of her strength to get level in the raging wind and torrents of rain, but she finally completed what she was given to do and turned back to land. Out of nowhere, a white flash of light blinded Dakota for a split second. She felt a warmth outside of her red and purple scales. When the light subsided, Dakota opened her large, violet eyes and gasped. The Temple was aflame! At first she was grateful that she had been out of the Temple when the lightening had struck, but then everything clicked. Noetia, Taliff, and the mentors were still inside! She struggled to land, zigzagging this way and that, taking an entire eternity, or so it seemed, before her claws touched solid ground. "Noetia!" she cried into the burning building No response answered over the crackling fire. Dakota ran for the inside, but a large beam crashed in front of her, forcing her to stop. Dakota ran around the building repeatedly, searching desperately for some way to get to her Rider, but found none. Dakota felt her strength weaken as the precious minutes ticked by, not only closing in on Noetia's fate, but Dakota's as well. She coughed and, on the last cough, water spewed out of her mouth and onto the inferno before her. This new-found ability, added on to the pelting rain, began to dim the fire. Dakota searched within her body, trying desperately to refind this ability. She choked and blew water again, this time dousing the flames for good. Dakota ran over the broken-down Temple and rummaged through its ruins. Masters Ivory and Vario were alright, since Ivory had used his protective body as a shield for his Rider. Taliff was shaking off the ashes, but Noetia was nowhere to be seen. Dakota began digging in the rubbish, searching desperately for her friend. She felt something give way under her and she dug harder, albeit gentler so as not to harm Noetia. She finally wiped away the ashes from a face and choked. She backed away, refusing to believe what she had seen. "What is it, young one?" Maste Ivory asked He and Master Vario looked where Dakota had balked and Ivory's shoulders sagged noticeably. He looked back towards Dakota, "These things...happen" he said, gesturing towards the lifeless body of Noetia, "There was nothing you could have done" Dakota shook her head in defiance and backed away. The winds were beginning to die down now, so Dakota took to the air and whipped away from the Temple, never to be seen there for a long time to come. ooc: I hope that wasn't to serious. I was wondering if Taliff could possibly go after Dakota, since the mentors are too old, and find his human partner. Just a thought...

"Oh no." Taliff said as Dakota flew away at the greatest speeds her wings could take her. He looked down at the small body momentarily and then to the mentors. "Are both of you all right?" he asked quickly.
"Yes, we are. Though Ivory's wing looks like it has been hurt." Vario was inspecting his great companion and when he prodded the wing, the great white dragon actually winced.
"I'm going after Dakota. It is too dangerous for her to be out there alone, especially in her condition now." Taliff freed himself from the last of the rubble of the temple.
"Taliff, wait!" He looked back at Vario's voice. "In case you don't come back. I know you want to meet the one who was to be your rider. It is written clearly in you. You have to know the way though and i want you to take this. I prepared it for you before all of this happened." Vario handed him a small scroll then explained to him where the village was located.
"Thank you, Master Vario. I will return with her if i can and if she will. If not, i will take care of her as best i can." He thrust himself into the sky, the winds carrying him quickly away in the direction that Dakota had flown.
Vario turned to Ivory and began to care for his damaged wing. "There goes a true wild dragon of old, Ivorenethinyternen. Something that has not been seen in thousands upon thousands of years." Ivory nodded, then winced again as Vario began treating him.
Taliff flew as if the very fires of hell were on his tail, his wings straining to take him forward and to catch up with Dakota. His eyes, so much stronger than even most dragons, were just barely able to pick out the tiny shake that was her red/purple form so far ahead of him through the rain and lightning. He dodged quickly to one side as he felt the building of energy around him and he barely got out of the way of the bolt of lightning that blasted by him. He wondered breifly how Dakota had managed to dodge them thus far and still manage not to be thrown to her doom by the winds.
He surged forward, his wings pumping harder and faster than he had ever flown in the storms before and soon he was visibly gaining on her though he could tell that she was wearing herself out, not being used to the fast and demanding flying that the storms required. He looked around below them and realized that he knew where they were and as he caught up to her he began herding her towards the ground and a nearby cave that would protect them from the raging storm. As soon as he forced her inside, he followed and blocked the entrance with his own bulk as another jolt of lightning struck just outside of the cave.
He was just glad that it was still here and that it had not been blocked in the many years since he had been gone. He looked down at her in the darkness of the cave, his eyes able to see despite the dark, and he saw that her features were wracked with grief. Had it been possible for their kind, tears would have been running rivers from her eyes. He did the only thing he knew to do and pulled her close in a draconic version of an embrace, wrapping his neck, wings, and tail around them and holding her close.

Dakota felt herself shaking in Taliff's embrace, almost too overcome with grief to resist anything anymore. She curled up next to Taliff's warm belly and fell fast asleep, a few persistant sobs pestering her here and there. ******** When Dakota awoke, she found herself still in the cave and remembered what had happened the day before. She rubbed her scaled face in the dirt on the ground of the cave to re-energize and bring the feeling back into it. Dakota remained curled up in a ball, however, as Taliff entered the cave, a large stag in his mouth. "Are you hungry?" he asked Dakota could tell that he was sincere, but she felt that nothing could ever bring her joy again. Taliff sighed, his breath warming the cavernous room, "Don't worry, the pain is temporary. You will learn to speak with Noetia again" Dakota was only half-listening as she closed her eyes again to sleep. Too much had happened for her to swallow it all in one bite.

Taliff lay the dead stag off to the side and lay back down next to Dakota. Her grief was still too new, it seemed. He knew not what to do. He had never experienced the loss of a rider or even of a friend so close. He only hoped that being there for her would be enough. That the fact that he had no rider to unconsciously torment her with would be good for her.
He decided that his trip to see the human would have to wait until after the storms too much had happened in this short amount of time and he knew instinctively that Dakota needed someone to be there for her now while the human was not expecting him at all.
When she was ready, he would be here for her to talk to. The storms continued to blow outside. Lightning continued to flash. And the rains pounded the ground almost as if they were the very tears that the dragon could not shed.

Dakota awoke again later that day and looked outside that cave. The storms were still pounding outside. Dakota gently moved away from Taliff, snuck a little meat from the stag, and went outside. She let the rain pelt her scales as they shifted from red to purple in the cloudy light. "Dakota" said a voice Dakota looked around, but saw no one. "Dakota" it said again Dakota cocked her head, "Dakota, come inside, please. You'll catch your death out there" Dakota looked behind herself and smiled. She should stop worrying about her friend, even though it was the most painful feeling she had ever experienced. She walked to Taliff and, as she passed him, said, "Thank you for being here for me, sir. I know you have other places to go" Dakota sat next to a fire within the cave and said, "I know not why this had to happen, we were so happy, but I guess everything has a reason, doesn't it, Taliff?"

Taliff added a large branch to the fire he had started. "Yes, little one. Everything in life has its purpose. Every action, every reaction, every birth. . . And every death. The occurances make us stronger." He breathed fire a moment, though it wasn't a usual breath weapon for him, and the fire blazed warmer. "Also, i have no place to go that is more important right now."
Dakota sighed but nodded. Taliff sat up straighter, holding his hed high. "Dakota, listen to me." She looked up at him. "Do you remember what i said earlier? About you learning to speak with Neotia once more?" She nodded slightly. "What i said was true. She will never truly be gone from you. She will always be there," he tapped her chest gently with a talon, "in your heart adn in that she yet lives on. She will live on in your heart so long as you remember her."

Dakota smiled at Taliff's comforting words. She felt better now in finding hope within those words. "Taliff" she said, "I thought that I would be alone forever when I saw Noetia..." her voice trailed off in sorrow, Dakota snapped back, "But now I know that I will never be alone when I am surrounded by such an amazing friend" she grinned at Taliff, "I think I'm ready to move on, sir" she said, "Just like a side-ache, the pain may be eased by stretching myself"

"Aye, litte one. We can go anywhere you wish to. We can explore the wide world over. But first i must do something. And in this i must go alone." When she looked curious he sighed. "I have to meet someone. Someone who i disappointed so many years ago. To make me stronger."
"How long will you be gone?" Dakota asked, looking up at him.
"It should not be too long. If you need me, use your mind to contact me. Just as you have been taught. It will work just as well with one of our kind." Taliff knew this from experience having used it before. "Remember. I will always be here for you as long as i yet live. Now, while i am gone, eat something more. You will need it if we are to fly far."
Taliff walked from the cave but just as he was about to take flight in the high winds Dakota darted out after him and rub her head against his neck. "I hold that as an oath, Taliff."
"I feel the same way." Taliff waited as Dakota went back into the cave then he took flight in the strong winds, blessing the fact that at least the rain and lightning had ceased though the sky was still somewhat overcast. He circled once, getting his barings, then flew in the direction of the town. Storms or not this was something he had to do before he left. Taliff regretted leaving Dakota alone for this amount of time but this was something he felt he had to do alone.
Taliff landed just outside of the village that Vario had directed him to, the winds buffeting him, and began making his way slowly towards it. Now that he was here, he could not turn back but doubts were running through his mind. So many ‘what if’s that they were like to drive him mad. He took a deep breath to calm himself. People were beginning to come out of houses with weapons in their hands and that breath caught in his throat a little bit. Were they so unused to dragons that they would attack him? Then again, without a dragon protector, they would have had to do some protecting of themselves. . .
A tall human looking to be in his forties stepped out away from his people, a very large sturdy looking bow held taunt in his hands. Taliff knew as the human stepped forward that this was the one. The protector of these people. Of this village. And he had to admire the human for the courage to threaten a dragon so many times his size, no matter how strong the training had made him.
Taliff bowed his head in greeting, meeting the human’s dark brown eyes and seeing . . . something. . . buried deep within them. The wind whipped the humans hair around his head. It was kept just above ear length shorter than a dragon rider would have but still denoting him as protector. “I mean you and your people no harm, human. This I swear to you.”
The human lowered his bow slightly. “My apologies. We are just not used to seeing many dragons. I am Corian, protector for this village.”
Taliff took another breath. He was right. This was the human. “Then it is you I am here to meet.”
“Is there something I can help you with, great one?” The man looked curious but wary also. He had no knowledge of Taliff and no reason to trust him.
Taliff looked around at the villagers that were gathering near. “May we speak in private please? This is slightly personal.”
Corian looked at Taliff suspiciously for a minute then nodded. “All right. There is a clearing a little ways away, just inside the woods. I go there to train occasionally. Meet me there shortly. I must speak with the people of the town first.”
“Of course. I will go and wait for you there.” Taliff flew to the clearing and settled there, barely able to fit and not hit his wings on the blowing trees. He took two deep breaths while waiting. He was nervous as he never had been before and each moment only prolonged it.
He did not have to wait long. A short while later Corian arrived, his sword sheathed at his side and his bow in his hand, though not drawn now. When he sat down, cross-legged in front of Taliff, he looked up at the dragon with no fear in his eyes. Taliff did detect though something long buried. Longing. Taliff pulled out a small scroll and handed it to the man. Vario had given it to him to deliver to the human before he left and told him to wait until the human had read it to broach his subject.
Corian broke the seal then took a moment to read through it. It was brief and to the point, “Listen to this dragon, my young friend. He has much to say that may be of interest to you and do not judge him until you have heard it all.” It was signed ‘Vario’, with another seal. He looked up at the dragon before him, curiosity and wariness in his eyes once more. “All right. I am listening.”
Taliff looked away for a moment, up into the sky, then back at Corian. “I am the dragon who was to be your partner all those years ago.” Corian’s eyes widened and Taliff hurried on before the human could say anything. He did not know what the message had said. “I was afraid. I couldn’t know what it would mean to be joined so closely with someone. I also wanted to see things as no dragon has seen them in thousands of years. To learn things as they have not been learned. I was too young then to consider what I was doing to you but I have regretted it for some time. We had never even seen each other. I want to apologize for that.” He looked down now. Waiting for Corian to answer and unable to look at him now for fear of what he would say.
Corian was silent for a while, considering what Taliff had said. He looked at Taliff but the dragon refused to meet his eyes. Finally, he spoke and Taliff’s greatest fears were put to rest. “I did’t blame you. Not even at first. In truth, I blamed myself when I was told of your departure.”
Taliff looked up quickly. “It was never your fault. If anything it was mine.”
“Try telling that to a twelve year old boy whose very life thus far was made meaningless. How could I have known that I was not to blame?” Corian’s voice was nothing but kind and Taliff was amazed that he was showing such restraint and lack of anger. “I did realize later that it could not have been my doing. And, in actuality, I think that it made me stronger than I ever could have become if we had joined. I have had nothing but my own strength to depend upon.”
Taliff barely took a moment to consider about what he was going to say. He knew it was right and it was what he wanted. He hoped that it would not hurt Dakota but he had to do it. “That could change. We could . . . We could bond as we were meant to so long ago.”
Corian’s eyes widened and a smile spread across his face making him look so much younger than he was. “Truly? You would do that now? Despite how old I am?”
“We are both older than normal. What difference does it make? We would have been this age together had we joined when we were young.” Taliff waited once more for Corian’s answer. He had little doubt now as to what it would be.
“Thank you. I could never have expected this. What is your name? I never even knew.”
“I am Eribonyxtaliffisianin. Mostly, I am called Taliff. Corian, I thank you for this. I knew not what to expect when I decided to meet with you.” Two pairs of eyes met and held and the process of bonding began, ceremony or not.
“I never expected to meet you at all, Taliff. And I am very glad that you decided to. And I doubt that the very first dragon rider could possibly feel more honor than I do at being chosen by a true wild dragon. Because that is what I think you are. A fully grown, fully free, wild dragon that has chosen me to be your companion.” He stood and walked towards Taliff then wrapped his arms around the dragon’s serpentine neck and Taliff knew that he meant every word of it.
“Come, Corian. Let us fly together for the first time. Just the two of us in the sky.” Corian’s eyes brightened like those of a child who has just been told that he may go to his first festival and a broad grin spread across his face as he pulled himself up to straddle Taliff’s neck, just above his shoulders. Taliff bore them both aloft, the added weight as nothing to him with the new lightness in his heart.
They flew with youthful abandon, facing the winds and just flying together. Corian held on tightly, not used to flying having never done so, but every time Taliff looked back at him, he urged him on faster and Taliff was pleased to do so. Taliff corkscrewed towards the groud and Corian was forced to wrap his arms around the neck of the dragon but Taliff pulled up at the last moment to spiral into the air, his rider still firmly in place.
His flight slowed as he spotted the smaller form of Dakota coming toward them. He didn’t know quite why she was coming but he prepared himself for whatever it might be. “It is the dragonet, Dakota, my friend. I don’t know why she is coming here though. I told her to wait for me. That I had to do this alone.”
“Never alone again, Taliff. Whatever it is we will face it together.” Taliff looked back over his shoulder at Corian and knew that he would never feel alone again, so long as they both lived.
((OOC: Hope you like this. Doesn't really have much of your char in it because, as he said, it was something he had to do alone. . . He is just hoping the fact that he has found his rider won't hurt Dakota too much. Who knows? It might make her feel better. That she may one day find a new rider.. . . Up to you of course, how she reacts.))
