This topic covers how-tos on several issues that are continually popping up.
Look here first, then if your question isn't answered, post somewhere about it.
I want to...
Link To A Web Site
This be easy. For a URL that looks like this: www.apple.com/imac, All you have to do is type the URL of the site between URL tags, which look like this:
For a better-looking URL, like this, you'll need to put the URL within the opening tag, like this:
This works like the HTML "A HREF" tag. The text between the two tags is what the URL will say on your post.
Okay? Good, I knew you'd get it.
Something neat you can do: Just like in HTML, you can make images be links, too! And it's easy! All you have to do is make a URL tag with the link hidden (the second kind), then, instead of typing text to show, place the code for an image, as seen in the next set of instructions.

Post An Image
Posting images isn't hard, but does require a little work on your part.
Images must be uploaded to the web before you link to them - that way, they're accessible 24/7. The easiest way to do this is through a dedicated image hosting server, like Imageshack. You might also use Photobucket or something else.
I'm going to use Imageshack for this tutorial, but the instructions are similar for the other servers.
First thing to do is choose the image to be uploaded, while on the site. Note, and you'll see it further down, that Imageshack places a restriction on what you can upload - be sure your image fits the guidelines.
Then this.
Having done that, click the Host It! button and wait a few seconds, more if you're on Ye Olde 56K.
When the new page loads, you'll see something like this. There's a bunch of options to choose from here, but all link to the same image - they just do different things. I will most often use the Direct Link To Image URL.
Copy the URL you want, then come back here and start a new post, or modify an old one, if you haven't already.
You're almost done. At the point in the text where you want the image to be, type
Assuming you copied that URL, (you did, right?) you can just hit Paste or CTRL-V to insert the URL. Then close the IMG tag with
And you get this:
Type more if you want, then post your message.

Have A Custom Avatar
For those of you who might not know, an avatar is a nice little picture that gets displayed under your username. There are restrictions on avatars, so be careful when choosing yours.
To have your own, you need to follow the Image Posting instructions all the way to the point of choosing which link to use. Remember I normally use Direct Link To File? Well, I still do, but now, you don't have a choice - copy that link!
Once you do that, go to your profile, hit Modify Profile, and then in the box labeled Avatar URL, paste the link. DO NOT put any IMG code in the box, just the http:// link. Okay? Good.
If you want to resize your avatar, you can do so with the two boxes right below this. Example: Your avatar is 50x50, not the limit of 100x100. If you put 100 in the Height box and 100 in the Width box, the forum will automagically scale up your avatar. Nifty, huh?
Once you've done all that, save the changes to your profile and be happy!

Post A File
This follows essentially the same format as posting images, so you don't get an picture-filled walkthrough. Takes too long.
Anyways, say you've got a file, not an image, that you think everyone should download. Maybe it's a snazzy new music piece you wrote, or something cool like that.
Just like with images, you need a server to upload your file to. These servers are a dime a dozen, you can search Google for them, but I will link you to one: FileWire
Here we go. Got yor file ready? Good. Go to the hosting site, and see if it's going to ask you for a registration - most do. They're also usually free, if not, go somewhere else. Once you've registered and maybe activated your account, go back to the site, log in, and hit the Upload button. It's going to look different in different places, but you get the idea.
Once there, and logged in, you may or may not be brought to a new page to upload. All this means is you'll wind up clicking 'Upload' more than once - one time to get to the page, one time to bring up the Upload dialog.
But in any case, you will eventually be presented with a dialog that looks exactly or very much like the one you got when you were uploading an image. (If you didn't upload an image, scroll up a bit and take a peekie) Choose the file you plan to upload, then hit the Choose/Upload button on the dialog.
!!!!! WARNING !!!!!
If you are using a dial-up or 56K connection to the Internet, this process could take a very long time.
Now you're back on the page. With file selected, hit Upload for the last time and wait. And wait. And maybe go make a sandwich. But when the server does finish it's thing, you'll be brought to yet another page, with a link to your file, and possibly one to delete it as well.
Heads up: The server may try to be nice and preformat the link to make life easier on you. If the preformatting turns out to be in HTML, like seen below, it's poo and you can't use it. This forum doesn't like HTML code.
All you need is the link to the file itself, which is between the "quotes" in the code.
Anyways, once you've got that, bring it back here, and again, make a new post, or modify an old one. Then, type this:
Be sure to replace the fill-in URL and name. If you do it right, you'll get something like this:
Shingebis' Awesome File
Now post the message.
