Far above a myriad of canyons, Nightskye once again searched for a place to spend the night. As far as Pteranodons went, she was a little larger than usual--being a half-size larger than a skybax--but that wasn't why the rest of her kind had rejected her. By a wry twist of fate, Nightskye had been almost all black since she was hatched with only two streaks of dark teal on her wings. that simple fact had caused her kind to exile her as soon as she was old enough to fly, leaving only one fellow pterosaur as her friend.
Nightskye clacked her beak in irritation as she circled lazily on warm air currents. Couldn't they be satisfied with just her banishment? Did they have to drive her all the way to Canyon City's Pteranodons before they stopped? Even now, she could catch glimpses of far-off skybax coming and going from the Rookery. Instinct told her that she was approaching the border between her clan's territory and the Canyon City's clan and that she should turn back, but that was impossible unless she wanted to be scored with hundreds of beaks. Unlike civilized saurians and skybax, Pteranodons were a somewhat violent group. More often they tormented rather than fought, but they didn't hesitate when the rare fight was inevitable.
A tempting roost caught her golden eye and she angled her decent so she could have a better look at it in the process. It was the flat top of a spire and only thirty-feet in diameter; no protection from her clan or one of the Drivers. Still, she decided with a warbling sigh, it was better than nothing.
She made a perfect landing and briefly wished that her mother, Lightbreeze, could have seen it. Of her parents, Lightbreeze had been the most influential in her flight skills. Her father, Skysoar, had basically ignored her since she had hatched and only acknowleged her when he absolutely had to.
Nightskye shook her head with a defiant screech that echoed off the canyon walls. Let her people think what they will. As soon as she flew beyond Canyon City, she would be free of their relentless pursuit. "That is, if the Drivers don't get hungry enough to ignore the sunstones. Then I'd be in trouble." She thought nervously. As the last rays of the sun dipped below the horizon, Nightskye settled herself down for a restless night's sleep.
-----,-----@)
In the early morning, just as the thermals were beginning to rise, a skybax cry brought Nightskye out of a sound sleep with a jolt. The skybax and their Riders didn't usually fly out this far without a reason. Nightskye raised her head and stretched her wings, keeping an eye out for any other pterosaur. A lone shape high above caught her attention and she readied herslef for flight in case it turned out to be one of her chasers. No, she corrected herself, and relaxed. It was only a skybax and no threat to her. Still, it wouldn't hurt to go see what their purpose was.
Leaping off the edge of the cliff, Nightskye drifted slowly upwards. So far she hadn't been seen, one of the benefits of her color and the darkness of the canyon below. To her eyes, there was no reason for the skybax to be out this way...unless someone had seen her flock the other day and ordered a count. They wouldn't stand a chance against her clan and the Drivers, Nightskye knew, and there was only one way to warn them.
Changing her glide to powerful, distance-eating strokes, she cought up to the pair. Pushing even harder, she zipped in front of them. "Go away! Turn around now!" Nightskye knew they couldn't understand her, but she had to try. When further phrases only confused the skybax more, she sreeched the chilling alarm call that would be recognizable despite the species.
The skybax jerked around and headed back towards Canyan City, correctly guessing her warning. Down below, her clan also heard the noise and now rose to give chase again.
Flying next to the smaller skybax, Nightskye coud see the rider glance behind them in fright at the racous war-cries of the Pteranodons. Nightskye didn't bother; she already knew what it was like. The pace they were going was too slow to outrun them for long. Nightskye felt elated when she pushed herself faster. This was the fastest she had flown in a long time! The skybax met her stroke for stroke and they asctually seemed to be drawing away.
Returning her attention to the front, she rolled herself out of an impact with one of Canyon City's spires. She couldn't believe she had made it in so little time. Regardless of the many skybax, Nightskye perched on one of the landing platforms and taunted her former tormentors with screeches and whistles. She didn't say anything legible, ubt sounds were just as effective as words, she found. Forced by clan boundaries, the others turned away, but not before Nightsky caught a glimpse of a much larger pterosaur (larger than a northie) in their midst. It was only a matter of time before they turned their attention on the skybax. She clapped her beak violently and prepared to take off again.

ooc: I love your standards, Nightskye! Awesome, awesome, awesome! Kendi could not believe her eyes, just in front of her, on one of the landing platforms, stood the most unique, unusual Pteranodon she had ever seen, and she had seen a lot of them. Kendi did not dare come any closer than she was now, for fear of frightening the great Saurian more than fear for her own life. She listened as the strangely large Pteranodon began cawing and clacking its beautiful beak. It was looking towards a large number of other Pteranodons defiantly, as if daring them to come closer. It was not difficult for Kendi to see why, either. The saurian was much larger than the others, even the mighty skybax seemed dwarfed next to her majestic figure! Kendi was so wrapped in her awe that she jumped back when the Pteranodon suddenly took off at a sharp dive. Kendi ran to the edge and could just barely make out the two streaks of deep teal on the saurian's back. It seemed as if the pteranodon was on a mission. Kendi followed the tilt of its head and gasped. An enomous flyer was yards away from one of the Riders. Kendi looked closer and gasped again, it was her trainer! She quickly stood and ran back to the cave-dorms of Canyon City, almost tripping on a rock in her rush to get help. Not having finished her training, she did not have a skybax partner and, quite frankly, she was glad of that fact, although it was quite a disadvantage at times, such as now. The skybax wereamazing creatures, no doubt about that, but they did not have that wild spark of life to them that drew Kendi to the pteranodons. Kendi ran at a break-neck pace towards the nearest classroom, slammed open the door, and yelled, "There's a Rider in trouble! Just below landing platform nine, hurry!" The class looked at her strangely, "A Dinoptopian mind is a calm mind, Cadet," said the trainer, a blonde-haired woman only about two or three years older than Kendi, "What is it that you need?" "It's not what I need, Captain Elsu is in grave danger! He needs more Riders now!" She almost yelled in her panic "Oh dear, class dismissed. Cadet, call your skybax, we are going to need at least two Riders to scan the perimeter for any other strays we might encounter" "I beg your pardon, but I don't have a skybax" Kendi interrupted "Ah, very well, then, I will go get Captain Oolu" said the captain, and she took off at a light jog towards the Partner's Headquarters Kendi paced the dusty cliff for moment before heading back to the platform. She almost fell off with the force of her stop just before the cliff dropped sheerly to the small thread of a river below. She pushed her ebony hair out of her face and searched eagerly for the two lines of teal, the hieght only giving her the usual thrill of yearning. There they were! The light blue of her mentor's partner gave them away. Unfortunately for Captain Elsu, it also gave away their position to the gargantuan predator. Kendi still searched for the twin streaks, but could see nothing. She really was worried now! What if the pteranodon was hunting with the other flyer? She shook her head, Pterasaurs never attacked unless they were desperately hungry, and if that were the case, the larger pterosaur would be eating the smaller one before it attacked a skybax and Rider. Two gusts of wind whipped her long hair back into her face as Lightwing, Oolu, the female captain and her partner swooped towards the struggling Captain Elsu. It was then that Kendi found the two teal streaks, remarkably close to her mentor's partner.

Diving into the dark canyon shadows, Nightskye glanced upwards at the skybax. She nearly panicked when she realized the Driver had covered more distance than she had thought and was now just five pterasaur-lengths from it. The victim wobbled as if it had just past its reserve strengths.
Why do I have to risk my neck at everything? Nightskye thought sourly, but sped around towards the back of the Driver, the wind created by a 30-foot wingspan buffeting her violently. She forced herself high enough for a short dive, pecking the Driver's wing at the last instant. Ignoring the deep croak of anger, the more nimble Nightskye zipped on ahead, coming beside the skybax to help ease some of the wind draft.
Two more skybax rose from seperate platforms, one with the same blue-clothed rider as the one next to her. "Do you have to send a whole bloody patrol for me to save?" Nightskye whistled and croaked, annoyed that they would even consider sending scouting parties out to get mauled. Once she was sure her charge could make it, she arched back around to face the oncoming Driver. "They're horrifying when they're feeding on others in their large numbers, but they're cowards alone," she remembered her mother saying, but that did little to boost her courage. True, all she wanted to do was scare it away. Like every one of the wild pterasaurs, however, she hated the Drivers more than her clan.
That hate spurred her on as she flew every which way about the big pterasaur, testing her flying skills to the limits. Slow to move around, the Driver glided as its nine-foot long beak snapped wildly, missing Nightskye's wings by inches. This Driver was stubborn , she realized grimly, and would take more than one Pteranodon to scare off. She briefly considered calling a mob up from the canyons below, but they were too far above the sunstones.
Suddenly, the beak snapped around and closed on her left wing right below her clawed fingers. Nightskye couldn't help it, flapping wildly with only one wing, she let loose a chilling shriek at the searing pain. Positioning herslef for a final blow was too difficult and she began loosing hope that she would live.
Multiple skybax screeches caught both of their attentions. Nightskye glanced behind her and was amazed at the sight she saw. Dozens of skybax had appeared on every single landing platform and were posturing threateningly. It was certainly enough to make her feel nervous, but the Driver must be terrefied. Sure enough, the beak opened wide enough for her to jerk her badly-sliced wing free.
As Nightskye turned around, the Driver's fading croak promised more to come, a sure sign that the Drivers had once again risen to feed.
One riderless skybax approached her and gestured to a lone platform with its red-crested beak. Apparently now they didn't mind her landing which would only baffle their riders. Her wing gave out just as she landed, causing her to screech once again.
Humans poured onto the platform, speaking so fast and highly that even Nightskye's minimal knowlege was of no use. She snapped at one blue rider when he got too close for comfort. Usually she would be shy with this many strangers, but pain always made her grumpy; this was no exception. One female rider with hair as black as Nightskye's own wings squeezed next to the blue rider and whispered something in his ear. The later tensed and hesitated, but then nodded in agreement.
The charcol-haired woman approached Nightskye slowly, which Nightskye guessed meant that she didn't want to scare her. Holding her human hand up in a familiar gesture, what came out of her mouth was so random, that for a moment, Nightskye couldn't reply properly.
"Breathe deep," she said in clear (albeit horribly pronounced) pterasaur.
((ooc: Blazetail, I hope you don't mind that I made your char take the initiative, but I couldn't think of anyone else who would. Let me know what you think of this so far.))

ooc: Thanks, Nightskye, you played my char perfectly, I probably would have made her do the same thing!
Kendi's heart raced as she waited for the pterasaur to reply. Now that she could have a closer look, she could tell that this pterasaur was female, obviously abused, but still remained as firey as any other of her kind, if not more so. The golden eyes she looked into showed a lot of hurt and sadness. Finally, the pterasaur held up her good wing and replied, "Fly High" Kendi could not recall anymore of the little pterasaur she knew, so she tentatively reached out her hand towards the long beak and laid it across, trying not to flinch as the pterasaur almost violently broke away. Finally, she felt the pain this pterasaur, Nightskye, felt in her badly sliced wing and brought up the feeling of a desire to help her. Nightskye relaxed and Kendi looked around for anyone who would be willing to help take the majestic pterasaur to a sheltered place for her to heal. No one, even Captain Oolu, looked eager to have the pterasaur in their quarters. Kendi, her hand still on the pterasaur's head, wondered if Nightskye could walk a few feet to her cave-dorm. She felt hesitation in reply, but soon the pterasaur got onto her small feet, using her good wing to balance, and sort of wobbled with Kendi by her side, just in case Nightskye lost her balance, to her dorm. Kendi pulled back some curtains, revealing a perch reserved for her future skybax partner. She smiled at the pterasaur, then went to get some salves and bandages for the wounds that gruesomly decorated the large flyer. As she searched the shelves that were about ten feet from the foot of her bed, the pterasaur squawked. Kendi turned and tried to make out what it was saying, but the only words she understood were, "The __________ feed" Kendi cocked an eyebrow and replied with a squeeky, "What feeds?" Nightskye sounded her caw slowly so that Kendi would understand, "Dee-righ-verrr-sss" she said Kendi's heart stopped and she had to catch herself from dropping the salves and bandages in her surprised dread. Why had Captain Elsu not told her this? Perhaps, in the confusion, he had simply forgotten, or Kendi had been too interested, no, intrigued with Nightskye that he did not have the chance. Of course, why would he bother informing her, anyway? She had no special connection with the mentor and, she was sure this played a big part in it, too, no skybax partner. The only ones who would need to know would be her classmates and others who had partners. She felt depressed and rejected, although not for the first time in her life. She quickly snapped out of her thoughts and walked to Nightskye, letting her feelings of assurance that the patrol already knew about the Drivers run through her hand as she gently rubbed on the salve.
********
Kendi was restless that night as she tried to find a comfortable position on her bed. The thoughts and feelings of worry for those who had gone to scout the territory of the Drivers mingled with her joy and amazement at having a true pteranodon sharing her quarters. Her childish excitement ran through her body as well as the worry, making her unable to sleep. Kendi sighed, got out of bed, and walked to her open door, taking in the cool breeze that wafted around Canyon City.

Hesitating for longer than she should have, Nightskye wondered how in the world the woman had learned pterasaur. Still, she hadn't taken intense drills from her mother on etiquete for nothing. Lifting up her good wing, she tentatively replied, "Fly high." There was only so far that she would go and touching hands was far beyond that point. The woman slowly reached forward with her upraised hand and Nightskye's heart skipped a beat as it came to rest on her beak. Feral instincts almost took over as she almost jerked her head away from that new and unfamiliar touch. Almost against her will, she felt the woman's mind touch hers in the new sensation of communion and could tell when her pain communicated itself to her mind by the tiny flinch of her cheek. Nightskye listened tensely as the woman, Kendi, did her best to say that she wanted to help her. She must be quite the outsider for her to offer this, Nightskye thought calmly, she herself knowing all too well the effects of not having a firm friendship with her kind. Finally she relaxed her wings and waited. She had long since tried to guess what Kendi would be doing next. Kendi glanced around at their silent audience, probably looking for help, but no one was forthcoming. Her next message neatly severed Nightskye's pride near the breaking point. She wanted to know if Nightskye could walk a little ways to her own nest where she could stay until she healed. Nightskye almost broke the communication right then and there, but the throbing in her wing told her that she wouldn't be going anywhere. Getting shakily to her feet, Nightskye balanced herself with her good wing and tried to preserve her dignity as she followed Kendi's lead down the wide corridors. In secret, she was grateful for the extra balance on her left side, but she had grown up in the wild and still resented relying on a human's help. Kendi's room was quite large and had an empty perch in one corner that was supposed to be for a skybax, but there was no signs of any recent activity. Kendi smiled at her before she went over to a container of some kind and took out some items that were supposed to be healing solutions and bandages. Nightskye felt obliged to speak to her about the Drivers. She squawked to get her attention. "The Drivers feed." She whistled as clearly as she could, for Kendi's knowlege was still unknown. "What feeds?" Kendi inquired, proving that what she knew was extremely little. Slowly, so as to make her understand, Nightskye croaked, "Dee-righ-verrr-ssss." It was only slightly annoying that no one could understand her. Her news seemed to make Kendri jump, but she recovered quickly. As she applied the bandages (sometimes Nightskye found it hard not to screech), she communicated the knowlege that the Skybax Riders already knew of the Drivers and not to worry. Silently, Nightskye wasn't so sure that she was telling the truth, but right now only wanted to sleep. And that she did as soon as Kendi was done. ((ooc: sorry i can't write any more. (Kendi grunted, got out of bed, and walked to her open door, taking in the cool breeze that wafted around Canyon City.) The masses of stars shone brightly above her, which, together with the light of the full moon, made it easy for Kendi to see the cliff's outline. She sighed and leaned against the doorway. Night, even with the confused feelings of joy and worry, seemed to make her depressed. It was not that Kendi had no reason to feel so down, she felt ignored, rejected and passed over often enough to cause such terrible feelings, but she knew she was meant to do more in life than simply sit around Canyon City, hoping that one day a skybax would accept her as its Rider. Frustration welled in her heart, why couldn't the flying saurians see her for who she was? Was it her attraction to pteradons that they sensed and feared? She definitely was not top in her class, but she knew the ins and outs of flying just like any other cadet and she felt that she could handle the immense responsibilities of being a Rider, if only a Flyer would give her the chance. Suddenly, a shadow fell over the cliff where the Skybax Patrol resided. Kendi looked up and gasped, a large figure, much larger than a "Northie", hovered over the moon for what seemed like an entire minute before diving down towards the small camp, screeching the rare but unmistakable call of attack. Kendi barley saw sunstones light up the other dorms and many other Flyers of the attacker's kind swoop into the camp before she ran inside, began opening the curtain to warn Nightskye, and felt her heart stop dead mid-beat. A slow, heavy breath warmed her neck, accompanied by a series of whistles Kendi could not understand, although whether it was out of fear or lack of knowledge she could not tell. She felt two large, clawed feet grab her by the ankles and begin to drag her away. Kendi grabbed the curtain as if it were the last thing that would save her and grunted in her effort to open them while being pulled by the large pteranodon. Frantic, Kendi called out, almost screaming, in her broken pteranodon, "Fly away!" She felt her leg snap and let go of the curtain in shock. Everything seemed a flash as she was whisked away from the safety of her dorm.

Nightskye didn't sleep as calmly as she had wanted to. Every time Kendi tossed in her sleep, she woke up, some inner alarm telling her that she had to leave. Then she would tell herself she only felt that way because she was inside out of view of the stars and doze off again. Still, that inner clock woke her up every thirty minutes until Nightskye was hissing under her breath in annoyance. Her mother had told her not to ignore these instincts, for they were from the days when every pterasaur was an enemy and Dinotopia didn't exist. Helpfull or not, she was finding it rather hard to sleep.
Around an hour after midnight, Nightskye heard Kendi rise up and head outside to her own perch-like structure that hung over the Canyon. Maybe what was making her feel so uneasy was bothering Kendi too. Nightskye shook her head in frustration. What she was thinking was impossible; no human in the history of Dinotopia had possessed the instincts of a Pteranodon let alone understand the traditional greeting. She still wasn't sure if she could trust Kendi, even though she had been the only one who volunteered to help her.
The thin fabric separating her from Kendi's nest fluttered in a sudden breeze. Nightskye's head snapped up, the wind readings from the day didn't fortell of any gusts at night. Trying to remain as still as possible, she sniffed the wind, only another pterasaur could make a breeze right out of the blue like that. Suddenly, the moonlight outside was blocked for a minute by something that wasn't a cloud. Nightskye's instincts were wide awake now and she wished dearly that she could move fast enough to tear down the curtain.
A brassy screech made her realize what she had been feeling...the Drivers had attacked Canyon City. Several more screeches filled the air and turned the relative calm into a noise-filled racket. Nightskye hopped down from the perch, raising her wings to balance herself. She could hear Kendi rushing inside and saw her hand clutch the fabric, but above all, she could hear a Driver's breathing coming from the hallway leading from the landing platform.
Kendi's body suddenly flattened as she cried out in what was none other than fear. The curtain quickly became taught, confirming Nightskye's fear that a Driver had a hold on her legs. Her next screech was indecipherable, but what Nightskye could make of it was, "Fly away!" Then, even on the other side of the partition, Nightskye could hear the unmistakable snap of a broken bone. The curtain became slack once more and the sound of a dragging body was clearly evident.
Nightskye, was beginning to see red. Kendi had been the only human who had helped her when she needed it and now she was being taken away! The dormant ability of feral Pteranodons surfaced with a vengance and she tore the fabric away with her beak. Her guess was right when she saw the Driver stop what he was doing at the sudden movement. He was smaller than the one earlier which could only mean that he was a juvinile, much easier to scare away than an adult.
Scaring him away was the last thing on Nightskye's mind. Hissing with such feralness that Kendi's wince was noticeable, she stepped forward slowly, both her wings held high in an unmistakable threatening posture. The Driver backed up only because he had no room to move in the confining quarters, still having a hold on Kendri's feet with one of his own. Nightskye hopped forward (careful to avoid stepping on her friend) and jabbed downward towards his toes, stopping short of actually making contact. The young Driver let go just like Nightskye knew he would and scrambled back into the expanse of the landing area.
A hand on Nightskye's leg made her glance down. Kendi's face was as white as a summer cloud, but she was shaking her head. "Do not kill." It was so faint that Nightskye surmised that she was in more pain than she was showing.
"No. He was going to kill you. He still may. The others will kill the skybax and their riders if I don't do something. You are in no condition to be making orders, Kendi."
That said, Nightskye returned her attention to the Driver in front of her, eyeing his neck muscles to see if he planned to attack. Even if her wing was immobile, she could still use her beak to her advantage. A muscle twitched and the head darted forward...only to meet thin air. Nightskye leaped aside and reached for the opening in his defense with a wide open beak. She clamped her beak around the Driver's neck and tightened mercilessly. The Driver flailed around with his claws, but he could barely open his wings in the cramped quarters. With a loud snap, his neck broke and the body went limp.
Nightskye spat the disgusting neck out of her mouth and leaped to the edge of the platform. With so many Drivers about, the sunstones would be dimmed, allowing free ascent for the Pteranodons below. Maybe this will make the skybax remember how to fight as well. She thought slyly. Taking a deep breath, she shrieked the old feral call for attack. Deeply embeded within each pterasaur, its call couldn't be ignored.
"Fight, fight, fight! The Drivers have come to kill you and everyone you know! Drive them away! FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT!"
((ooc: I hope you don't mind this part. I'm assuming it was a Driver who'd grabbed Kendi? If you have any problems with this, feel free to PM me or just let me know any other way.))

Kendi felt helpless, laying there on the floor, immobile. Pain was constantly shooting up her leg, causing her to beathe in short gasps. She tried to calm herself, to find some way of communicating to the others that she needed help. The dead Driver beside her stared blankly with its yellow eyes, and Kendi had to look away. She knew why Nightskye had killed the juvenile, in order to save her life. But she still felt sickened by the scene of a short life snuffed out so easily. Kendi's heart stopped as she realized what had just happened. A pteranodon had saved her life! The knowledge that someone actually cared seemed to slow her breath and help her heart beat a little more steadily. She dared to look down at her leg, it was bent at the calf in a strange angle, but no bones were protruding, thank goodness. Her other leg was alright, which was another blessing, at least she would be mobile after the broken leg had a splint on it. Kendi looked around for anything that would work as a splint, grateful for her mother's first-aid lessons and her father's great bravery. She smiled when she saw the short tribal stick her father had given her in order to remember her African heritage. It was just long enough to act as a splint for her leg, but short enough to allow her leg to bend. She knew it would be unwise for her to use her leg while it was still unset, so she used her hands and other foot to scoot to the prospective splint. She grabbed it, sat up, and felt the wound, grimacing in agony as she prodded where it hurt. Finally, taking a deep breath, she snapped the bone in place. It hurt much more than she had expected, and she cried out. However, after a number of deep breaths, Kendi set the tribal stick next to her leg, grabbed one of the bandages that were conveiniently on one of the lower shelves, and began wrapping her leg. A loud shriek made her jump; another call to fight. Kendi quickly finished up wrapping her leg and stood up, careful not to put any weight on it. She hopped to her doorway and looked outside. Nightskye (it was easy to recognize her lines of deep teal), was standing at the edge of the platform, watching for any kind of reply to her call to arms. Kendi's heart raced as a moment of silence from the Skybax Patrol seemed to drag on. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, Kendi recognized the blue of Lightwing's leathery skin as it dove into action. Kendi remebered the stories Captain Elsu had told her class about the Drivers coming to feed and how they were entirely unpredictable. Sometimes the wait would be months, other times it would be years. This time, it had been centuries and the Drivers had become an old wife's tale to frighten little children. Kendi could not believe what she was seeing. Her peaceful life was being shattered before her very eyes! She yearned to do something, anything, to help her people survive. Her thoughts were interrupted by more diving figures, although she could not recognize anyone in the dark of the night, since there were so many Drivers and skybax about that the moon and stars were completely blocked from view. Kendi did not dare to go any further out of her dorm than in her doorway, since she would be easy prey if she did. Nightskye was watching ernestly, raising her wings as if to take off, but her bad left wing preventing her from doing anything. Kendi caught something out of the corner of her eye and looked, an enormous Driver was diving towards Nightskye, his beak open as if to do to her what she had done to one of his comrades. Kendi looked at Nightskye, who was still watching the base of the canyon as if waiting for something. Kendi screamed the warning cry, the only statement she knew perfectly. Nightskye looked in Kendi's direction, Kendi looked at the Driver, but knew that her warning would be too late if Nightskye did not catch her hint. Nightskye followed her glance, jumped in surprise, and opened her beak as if to set the Driver aside, but Kendi knew he would be much too heavy and forceful for her friend to take on by herself. She began hopping out of her dorm, not entirely sure what she was going to do, but she was going to do it, when, out of the blue, Lightwing swooped in and took the predator by surprise on his left flank. The enormous Driver fell and rolled with the impact off the canyon edge. Kendi grimaced as she heard the panicked shriek of the Driver as it fell with a sliced wing to the base of the canyon. Oolu dismounted his partner and ran to Kendi and Nightskye as Lightwing took to the skies again. "Are you two alright?" he asked Kendi nodded, still in shock from the event that had taken place, "Yeah, we're alright, Captain" she gasped The pain in her leg suddenly activated again, and her vision went blacker than the night around her.

((ooc: sorry i haven't gotten to write in a while! by the way, i've invited Thenewguy to join. do you think that's okay?))
Nightskye waited there for what seemed countless seconds before she saw dozens of skybax take to the sky, one nearby having the feral gleam of the fighting pterasaur in his eye. Emboldened by the lack of gleam from the sunstones, numerous Pteranodons rose up from the depths below and wreaked further havoc with their mobbing. She longed to joint them, but common sense overruled her instinct for once and she stayed put.
Suddenly, Kendi screeched a sound that was familiar to the alarm call of a skybax and Nightskye looked back. Kendi locked gazes with her and then out at the night sky in alarm. Following her gaze, Nightskye felt a small thread of cold terror at the sight of a fully-grown Driver barreling down at her flightless form. Even as she opened her beak to intercept him, she knew he was too fast and too big for her to make it without killing herself.
Just as she thought she was going to die, the first skybax plummeted from above and sliced the Driver so bad that the pterasaur couldn't even possibly fly any more and Nightskye heard the satisfying shriek of defeat as the Driver fell to the canyon floor.
The skybax prepared to land, sending Nightskye scrambling back from the ledge. The rider on its back jumped off, freeing the former to return to the battle. The rider was an elderly human male and he glanced at the two of them in conscern. What came out of his mouth was unintelligable by Nightskye's terms, but Kendi seemed to understand and gasped an answer. Just as quickly as Kendi had gotten up, she fell to the floor again.
Nightskye hissed at the human in warning. He had better not have hurt her otherwise Nightskye would have no problems with defending her injured companion. What few words she knew in human were inadequate to ask him what he wanted, which only frustrated her.
The man glanced up from checking Kendi and even his carefully composed commander's mask crumbled at the menace Nightskye had put into her hiss. Very slowly, he held up a hand and said something that was curiously not forceful. Nightskye cocked her head and listened, making out only the occasional word. "...help...Kendi...heal...injury...not kill..." It was rough, and she was sure that she had missed a great deal of it, but Nightskye figured that the man wanted to get Kendi to an infirmary to help set her broken leg.
With a nod, Nightskye relaxed and warbled a few words that the man might not even catch. "Dee-righ-verrr-sss leeeve withh sssun." With that she gestured to the lightening sky with a caw of approval. The Drivers had chosen a terrible time for them to fight, not having gotten the layout of the City until near midnight.
When the man had taken Kendi out of the building, Nightskye watched the rest of the fight with a heavy heart. Despite herself, she fell into a fitfull sleep just as the sun peeked over the horizon. Shifting uncomfortably whenever she worried about Kendi.
((ooc: I've got to leave right now, but I have an idea how to make Nightskye's wing heal up more quickly. I'll tell you later.))

Kendi awoke in a daze. Everything seemed to swirl around her as if she had been spinning in circles non-stop. She jumped as an orange ovinutrix entered the small chamber, she smiled, "Oh, the patient has awakened, did you get the rest you needed, young one?" Kendi put a hand to her head to make the room stop spinning, "How long have I slept?" she asked, expecting at least a week "Almost two days now. By the way, you would not happen to know a pteranodon, would you? A big black one keeps flying around the Infirmary, making my patients very anxious" Despite the ovinutrix's stern voice, Kendi felt her heart leap, Nightskye had waited for her? She pulled back the covers, ignoring her dizziness, and attempted to head towards the chamber's exit, but was pulled back by something on her leg. Kendi fell and, with a loud crash, sent the glass of water the nurse had brought her flying to the ground. "Oh, no, Kendi, you mustn't leave the infirmary until the doctor passes you healthy enough. Please try to relax and calm yourself. My, my, hatchlings these days, much too impatient for anything..." The nurse rambled on until Kendi could stand it no longer, "Nurse, is there any way I can see my friend? Wait" Kendi paused, "Did you say she was flying?" The nurse nodded, "I noticed that she seems to favor one wing, but, yes, she was flying. And causing a lot of ruckus, what with her obviously injured wing and all." "Can I speak with her?" Kendi interrupted The Saurian Nurse looked at the seventeen-year-old girl with curiosity, "Of course, the advantage of the Infirmary of Canyon City is that we have a perch just outside the window for the injured skybax or Rider to speak with their partner. Do you wish me to open the window for you?" Kendi nodded eagerly and the window was immediately opened, "Now, I must warn you that if this friend of yours makes too much ruckus, she will have to leave, agreed?" "Agreed" Kendi replied, already watching the skies for Nightskye When the ovinutrix left, Kendi shifted her position in her bed so that she could look out the window more convieniently. Looking about herself to make sure no one would be bothered by the sound, Kendi called out Nightskye's name in Pteranodon.
ooc: Hey, I was wondering if you wanted me to have her heal already or not and if you wanted to come up with something that could have happened in the two days Kendi was in the infirmary, we could probably switch the two events or something. Let me know what you think. -Blazetail

((ooc: That's fine with me! I'm working briefly on the two days that have passed until Nightskye lands on the infirmary perch. This should be fun! ;D )) Nightskye woke around noon that day and briefly worried where Kendi was. Then she remembered...she had been injured by the Driver that had snuck onto the perch the night before. From what she knew, the humans had an infirmary somewhere in Canyon City, but it was too far away for her to fly there. Why not try healing yourself, stupid? Nightskye's inner self scolded. She'd forgotten that she could speed up her healing process to the point where she could fly while still favoring her wing. Her mother had drilled that into her since the day she was hatched; How could she forget? The thought was ironically funny and she laughed, the decending trill echoing throughout the room. Someone hesitantly entered the room and Nightskye at once saw it was the blue-clad human she had warned the day before. There was a small sand-filled box in his hands which immedeately struck her as odd. He was clearly frightened, but he didn't back down from whatever it was he was going to do. Pteranodons admired courage when faced with fear, so he immedeately recieved a higher ammount of respect in Nightskye's eyes. Setting the box down in plain view, he took out what looked like a piece of twig and began writing. Nightskye grew excited...he was using the simple footprint language to talk to her! Tilting her head so she could see what he had written, she read: "I AM COMMANDER ELSU. I INSTRUCT CADET KENDI FOR SKYBAX TRAINING. THANK YOU FOR WARNING US." Nightskye gently shoved him aside with her beak and clumsily used one of her three fingers to write her answer back. "NAME NIGHTSKYE...FRIEND TO KENDI...YOU'RE WELCOME...DRIVERS COME...THREE DAYS." A frown creased Elsu's face and he quickly wrote his own message. "WHEN DID THESE DRIVERS START FEEDING? WHEN WILL THEY STOP? IT'S BEEN SO LONG SINCE THE LAST FEEDING THAT THE TALES ARE CONSIDERED CHILDREN STORIES." Thinking of an appropriate answer, Nightskye wrote, "TAKE TOO LONG...NEED BIGGER BOX...RIGHT NOW...HUNGRY." That brought a smile to Elsu's face and he went to the door, shouting some instructions in his own language. As they waited for Nightskye's food to be brought up, they had a pleasent conversation (if one could call brief notes in sand an actual conversation), but Nightskye couldn't help but worry about Kendi. Eventually she told Elsu that she didn't want to talk anymore and applied herself vigorously to the fish that was brought up. Satisfied that she could now focus on healing on a full stomach, Nightskye settled herself down comfortably and fell into a trance-like state similar to sleep. ---,---@) It took her until late morning the next day for her to fix her wing to the point that she felt was trustworthy enough for her to fly on. With a screech of joy, Nightskye tore off the bindings and leaped into the fresh air. It was beyond words how wonderful it felt to fly (albeit rather shakily) again. Out of habit, she glanced in the direction of her clan and only saw a single pterasaur gliding on the morning's currents. There was no way to be sure that it was her brother, so she kept quiet. According to Elsu's comments the other day, the infirmary was one of the largest buildings in the city other than the skybax barn and rookery. Nightskye glanced downwards and focused on what rock formations were natural and what weren't. A group of humans was carrying a protesting skybax rider into one of the buildings, so she guessed that was the one. Gliding around the perimiter of the building, she cried the pterasaur approximation of Kendi's name, hoping she would be able to hear her. Several skybax whistled sharply at her to not get too close, but Nightskye payed them no heed. Her wing was protesting the sudden use, so Nightskye was forced to make a landing on a ledge above the infirmary roof. She only got a few minutes rest when an agressive skybax hopped towards her, warning her to stay away. He was probablly new to having a rider, so Nightskye took it calmly, only retorting with a croak that would have been incredibly rude if spoken in human. Kendi's mind was very close to the eastern side of the building, probably meaning that the other humans had put her there. Nightskye was determined to stay around untill Kendi replied (only to know she was all right), even if the skybax began acting like her old clan. She had eaten well yesterday and would not need to eat until that night. It was early afternoon when Nightskye suddenly heard her name called out in Pteranodon. Startled, her flight wobbled dangerously for a few seconds before she recovered to look for where the call had come from. A set of windowed doors had been opened near one of the rooms and it was from there that the familiar voice had come from. Despite herself, Nightskye let out a joyful shriek (causing many of the annoyed skybax to complain) and dove directly for the platform that was there. Her landing was less than perfect as her wing gave a mighty complaint, sending her hopping in one direction for a brief instant. There was Kendi, obviously combined to a human nest similar to the one she had slept in, but in otherwise good health. Crooning Kendi's name in her own language, Nightskye waited in embarassment for her to respond. ((ooc: I'm leaving the rest of their conversation up to you, Blazetail. Although I was wondering if there was a way to make Kendi understand what Nightskye had told Elsu about the Drivers. Feel free on that end.))

Kendi was elated when her friend approached and giggled (a very immature thing to do, although Kendi could not help herself, her joy was so great) when Nightskye tripped up a little on her landing. Nightskye crooned Kendi's name in Pteranodon and waited for her to respond. Kendi had so many questions to ask Nightskye, such as why she had waited two entire days just to see if Kendi was ok, what had happened in that time, and other such questions. However, since Kendi did not know such words in Nightskye's native tongue, she simply leaned out of her window and hugged the Pteranodon's long beak. Nightskye jumped a little in surprise, but soon accepted the action of friendship. Kendi released her friend and looked into her golden eyes, Kendi could tell that the pteranodon wanted to tell her something, but was restricted by their lack of communication. Kendi prayed that if there were any way for them to communicate better, to let it be known, and soon, if they were going to work together to ward the attacks of the Drivers. Suddenly, Kendi saw something click in Nightskye's sharp eye, she shivered and looked at Kendi, an uncertain look in her expression. "What disturbes?" Kendi asked Nightskye looked down undecisively but, after a few moments of what Kendi could tell was serious contemplation, looked back with a determined glint, "Gift" she said so that Kendi could understand Gift? Kendi thought, What kind of gift? Could there have been some kind of custom she had overlooked...no, Kendi gasped and looked up at Nightskye. The way Nightskye had said the word was entirely different than what you would say if you were presenting some kind of hatchday present. This was not A gift, but THE gift. Kendi shook her head, uncertain whether or not she was worthy of such a gift. This was very, very rarely given to human beings who were not Riders, and no one talked of such things, holding them much too personal to share with any other human being. In fact, The Gift was hardly talked about even between Riders, for fear some uncautious Cadet might hear them. The only reason Kendi knew was that she was old enough to have such a priviledged lesson in the communication of Rider and Skybax. However, it had NEVER been done between an ordinary human and a pterasaur, and the fact that she would be the first to have such a Gift caused Kendi to shrink from the offer before her. However, Nightskye was not to be deterred easily. She stretched her neck towards Kendi until her golden eyes were centimeters away from Kendi's hazel ones. She began warbling in explanation and Kendi strained to catch what she was saying. "Fear not...duty...pleasure...hope..." Kendi felt her heart burn as it thudded against her chest, she thought about the Drivers and the havoc they had created days before and wondered if the infestation would spread to the outer parts of Dinotopia. She could not let those creatures harm her family, friends, and all of the rest of Dinotopia. Finally, realizing that it was the last resort she held, Kendi took a deep breath and resolved in her heart to accept what Nightskye was so generously offering. "I accept" she said in pteranodon, and she saw the glimmer of Nightskye's smile. ******** Kendi sat upright on her bed, pondering what had occurred only minutes before. Her heart was beating fast and her breath was doing its best to steady itself. She had finally realized what Nightskye had given her. Not only was it the ability to speak in the pteranodon's language fluently, but also the pterasauric ability to heal swiftly. Already, the nurse had come in to check on Kendi's leg and was immensely surprised at the rapid progress it had made. Kendi was also pondering what Nightskye had told her about the Drivers coming the next night. Captain Elsu now knew as well, so Kendi had full confidence that the Skybax Patrol would be training vigorously to defend Canyon City from the brutal feeding that would inevitably arrive soon. Kendi took another sip of her Trilobur Tea and grimaced, the taste was terrible, but nesseccary if she was going to heal in time to help defend Canyon City. She remembered what Nightskye had instructed her to do in order to heal, so Kendi quickly gulped the rest of the tea, set the cup on her nightstand, and went into a trans, comforted by the fact that Nightskye was strengthening her own injury not too far away.

((ooc: actually, I found it very interesting. I've never thought about it turning into something like that! Do you think sometime we could pull in a guy friend for the both of them? It seems like your char could really use one.)) A high-pitched sound came out of Kendi's mouth once she had regained her balance. Nightskye saw the brilliant smile on Kendi's face and was inwardly pleased that someone who wasn't a pterasaur would be happy to see her. There was a joy so bright in Kendi's eyes that Nightskye found herself even more embarrased by all the attention. She was so occupied with waiting for Kendi to do something that she jumped a little in surprise when the girl's arms wrapped themselves around her beak. From what her parents had told her, this was something humans did when they had certain feelings towards one another; such as love, happiness, and friendship. She's given me everything and I have nothing to give in return. Nightskye privately bemoaned. Suddenly, some part of her consciousness gave her an answer that made her unfocused eyes snap back into focus. A tremor ran through her body at what she was thinking: Give Kendi the ability of The Gift? She had seen her best friend give a brief bit of it to a human they needed to leave their nest, but that wasn't even half of what Nightskye was considering to give her. She eyed her friend uncertainly. Kendi seemed to notice Nightskye's sudden change of behavior and asked gently, "What disturbs?" The longing deep within Kendi's eyes decided Nightskye. This girl was an outcast among her kind and an outcast among the skybax riders, though all she wanted to do was to have the aility to have a conversation with a Pteranodon. Kendi had no friends or a skybax from what Nightskye had seen, so this would surely change nothing. It was such a small honor compared with what Nightskye would've prefered to have given Kendi for her gift of friendship. With a determined glint in her eye, she phrased her next word carefully so she could understand. "Gift." Shocked silence greeted Nightskye's word for so long that she was wondering if Kendi had even understood her. After a moment, Kendi seemed to shrink away, but Nightskye was determined to make her understand how wonderous The Gift would be. "Fear not this duty. It will give you pleasure and hope," she warbled, though from the conscentration on Kendi's face she was sure that the girl had only heard a part of it. As if some inner transformation took place, Kendi's eyes regained some sense of purpose instead of that cold fear. "I accept." Nightskye's eyes twinkled with her smile. ---,---@) The mental transfer was so startling that Nightskye only had a couple of minutes to tell Kendi how to heal herself before the girl passed out on her nest. Satisfied, Nightskye returned to her previous perch on top of the infirmary. Glancing at the sun, she approximated how much time she had to begin healing herself again until Kendi's leg was healed and her own dinner. There were no skybax in the immedeate vicinity, which was a good thing, but with the possibility of afternoon Driver patrols, she couldn't help but feel a little afraid for them as she returned to her trance once again. ---,---@) It was late afternoon by the time Nightskye returned to the world around her. Her wing felt like it hadn't been hurt at all, but she knew better than to overexert herself. A form showed up on the exit from the infirmary and there was no doubt from the dazed way it moved that it was Kendi. Slyly taking to the air, Nightskye was a few yards behind Kendi when she trilled, "How do you feel now, Kendi?" ((ooc: I hope that's all right with you about the timeframe and all. Somehow we've got to find a way to scare Oonu and Elsu right out of their boots! ;D ;D ;D ))

ooc: LOL! I love the idea of a guy-friend! I've actually wanted to put some kind of romance into one of the RPs I've been doing for a while, and I will let you know that all romance that I write is entirely appropriate by personal law I also think it would be great idea to scare Oonu and Elsu. From what I've read in the books, Oonu seems a little too serious, don't you think? *evil laugh* Kendi wobbled outside, trying to get rid of the dizziness that encompassed her mind. "How do you feel now, Kendi?" said a strangely familiar voice Kendi looked around, then looked into the sky, in swooped Nightskye, landing only feet away from Kendi. The seventeen-year-old girl smiled as she finally gained control of her senses. Her leg was still a little weak, but well enough for her to move about on. A thought crossed her mind and she gave a mischievious grin towards her friend. "Do you think your wing is well enough to carry someone?" she asked only a little hesitantly Nightskye looked a little tentative as she glanced at her wing and back at Kendi. "Perhaps, why?" ******** Captain Oolu and Elsu were just outside the Rookery, enjoying the cool, evening air while keeping a lookout for the Drivers. If the stranger pteranodon had told them the truth that the predators would attack again tonight, they were going to be ready for them this time. "A fine evening, is it not, Straightflight?" Elsu asked his partner The skybax rolled his eyes at his human partner's feeble attempt to talk to him. Straightflight never understood a word Elsu said in his own language, but the Rider kept attempting to teach the stubborn skybax. Straightflight and Lightwing whipped their beaks around when an ear-peircing cry echoed throughout the canyon. A black figure dove from above them, mussing the humans' hair and making the skybax duck in order to just miss the invader's belly. The pterasaur turned and came at Elsu and Oolu again, but, just before it was about to seemingly shish-kabob Elsu and Straightflight, it landed and cackled. Another voice crooned behind the pterasaur's head, and Nightskye moved over to reveal the laughing face of Kendi! The girl was laughing so hard that she fell off her friend's back and hit her head on the sand. She could barely get out the words, "You should see your faces!", she was laughing so hard. Indeed, if one looked at the expression on the Captains' and skybax's faces, they, too, would join the duo as they rolled on the ground in laughter. Oolu was crouched in a position to jump on Nightskye to prevent her from harming his friend, but his face was so out of place (his eyes wide with one eyebrow cocked), that it tickled the inside of your ribs just to look at it. Captain Elsu's face was scrunched up with one eye open only a slit, but his face was partially hidden by Straightflight's outspread wings. When Kendi had finally gained control of herself, she stood and dusted off her clothing, still giggling a little to herself every now and then. Nightskye stood and shook off the dust on her leathery skin, dirtying Kendi's suit all over again. Kendi ignored the newly-placed dirt and saluted her instructor with a wide grin, "Kendi Keshi and Nightskye, reporting for service, Captain Elsu" Elsu and Oolu just stared. Their partners still frozen in place, uncertain of what to do. ooc: I hope that was what you had in mind, and please feel free to tell me if you don't like it. I am completely open to new ideas

((ooc: That was sooooooo funny!!! I was nearly rolling on the floor with laughter!!! By the way, how old is Elsu?)) Seeing Kendi doubled up in what Nightskye supposed was laughter was different. Nightskye had been surprised and a little nervous when she had asked her if she could carry somebody. Growing up in the canyons, Nightskye had never worn a saddle, but had found the fit to be quite comfortable after a few shrugs. Of course, startling the two blue-clad commanders was deliciously fun after two days of doing nothing. Her few dives at them had been totally her idea (with a little suggestion from Kendi, of course) and their reactions had been extremely gratifying. Glancing back at their two human victims, Nightskye found their faces twisted in such odd ways that she wondered if there was anything wrong with them. Apparently, that was the reason Kendi was laughing so histerically, so she brushed that feeling aside. The dust roused by her landing itched terribly and Nightskye couldn't resist shaking herslef just as Kendi finished dusting herself off. Oops, Nightskye thought in embarassment, but she returned her attention to the two skybax as Kendi said something in human. As far as pterasaurs went, the reaction these two were showing was as funny for her as their human partners' were for Kendi. She couldn't hold back her laughter anymore and a sharp series of ascending and decending whistles drew the skybax out of their stupor. What apparently was the youngest one relaxed first, but there was still some tension in his wings, showing that he didn't exactly trust her. The oldest one, however, hissed something at her in his own language. Not being fluent enough in skybax to understand, Nightskye nudged Kendi's shoulder politely. "What did the old skybax say?" Surprised, Kendi glanced at the older of the two men. She asked something in English that made the later immedeately straighten and respond in a tone that reminded Nightskye of the reprimands her father had given her. Whateven he had said, Nightskye didn't want him talking to her friend that way and croaked a warning, raising her wings as further emphasis. Kendi's reassuring hand rested on Nightskye's neck, drawing her attention. "It's okay, Nightskye. Don't expect him to accept everything at once." "Fine," Nightskye squeaked in return and nodded reluctantly, giving the elder one last warning stare. "But he better start listening to you now that you can fly." Kendi's face flushed slightly as she resumed talking with the two men. Once again, Nightskye wished dearly that she could understand enough English to hear what they were saying. She wouldn't be able to talk in English, she knew, but at least she would be able to hear what they said around her and Kendi. In a way, she was still an outsider despite her connection with Kendi and she didn't like it much. The younger skybax whistled softly to get Nightskye's attention. Very slowly so she could understand his croaks, he gestured to himself and said a single word, "Straightflight." That had to have been his name because he hadn't motioned to anyone else. Using the very limited knowlege of skybax, Nightskye copied him by gesturing to herself. "Nightskye." He didn't seem that old, and skybax were usually around the same maturity level as their riders, but she wasn't all that good with judging human ages. Compared to the men, though, it was obvious to see that Kendi was a youngster; probably a juvenile like Nightskye. Glancing at the silent skybax, she wondered how old he was. Straightflight followed her gaze then said another name. "Lightwing." There was a bit of sarcasm in his tone which Nightskye suspected reflected something in the past between the two. Thinking hard, Nightskye recalled the lessons her mother had given her regarding the most prominent riders of Canyon City. If the skybax was called Lightwing, then his rider must be none other than Captain Oonu, leader of the entire skybax corps. He was the person she needed to talk to, then, about possibly being overwhelmed by the number of Drivers that lay waiting in the canyon below. He might not know about thier kind by their collective name, but their species was called Ornithoceirus and maybe that would ring a bell. Their wingspan was over 30 feet and their bodies were much bigger than a man's; clearly that was something the skybax were not used to dealing with. Squawking loud enough to interrupt the conversation, Nightskye glanced at Kendi, her eyes hardening. "I need to talk with Lightwing's rider. It's important. You may need to leave Canyon City." ((ooc: I hope you don't mind my mellowdrama. Did I controll your char okay? Tell me if you did or didn't. I can always change it. By the way, I finally found out what the Drivers' real species name was!!!!!! ;D ))
