But to carry out themes of peace and a strong community I don't think you have to be a spiritualist.
Look at some of the most left-wing philosophers, some who envisioned utopias, were out-right atheists.

Hence the part that says "It doesn't necessarily take a religion to do that, but there are social mechanisms to make sure people follow the tenets that society wants them to follow, ie songs, schooling, social pressure, etc". I assure you, if I understand your position correctly (and I think I do), I won't be disagreeing with you much. In fact, those things I mentioned can be very secular, which is why I mentioned them apart from religion. - Aric
