My Chimera - painted in words
At the foot of blue-hued mountains grows a dogwood tree, no longer a tender seedling but not yet having reached the stage of weathered maturity, a tree bursting forth with vibrant white and pink blooms, the delicate blossoms releasing a strong, sweet fragrance, a crimson red cardinal perched atop the uppermost branch. The nest located in the security of the forked branches at the base of the tree does not belong to the cardinal but to another creature.
The sturdy foundation of the nest is constructed of bits of brick, mortar, and wood, formed into the shape of a heart. The nest itself is somewhat cluttered and disorganized, woven of various materials: scraps of multi-colored fabric; a variety of flowers in differing stages of bloom from unopened buds to fully opened to spent and shedding their petals, some stems smooth and soft, others prickly, still others with sharp thorns; interwoven amongst can be seen bits of soft fluff and downy feathers -- the same material with which the nest is lined.
The creature within is unique, an established presence yet not dominating the nest. The top and back of its head resembles that of a unicorn, the horn sharp and battle scarred, the mane flowing free. It's face is that of a deer, it's mouth that of a bee dripping with sweet nectar from which a serpent tongue occassionally emerges to strike out dangerously. It's eyes are those of an owl, wide, alert, and ever-watching. It's body is that of a centaur on whose underside is the pouch of a marsupial. The wings of an eagle spread wide to reveal feathers clipped at the tips. It's hind legs are those of an elephant, sturdy and slow, it's forelegs that of a cheetah, fast and sleek. The creature's arms and hands are those of a human, dextrous and strong yet able to reach and grasp and draw near. Dual tails grace the rear of the body, one that of an Ankylosaur with heavy club and deadly spikes, the other that of a rabbit, fluffy and soft.
The creature's mate having left the nest to forage for sustenance, at first it appears to be alone, yet another glance hints at shadowy figures about its feet. Closer inspection reveals three small figures whose own "hands" grasp at apron strings tied around the creature's waist while their feet stray toward the edge of the nest as if to climb out. The eldest appears as a yellow hybrid of dinosaur and penguin, holding loosely to the apron string with one "hand" while a scroll rests in the other, intelligence shining in its eyes. The middle figure is red, green, and purple, a reptile-like hybrid of frog, turtle, lizard, and snake, grasping the apron strings tightly yet every part of its body moving restlessly, it's keen senses constantly alert to its surroundings. The smallest holds the apron strings securely, it's body pink and soft, resembling that of a bunny or kitten, the top of it's head red with the horns of a bull, it's mouth constantly chattering in friendship to every other it meets, it's voice continually singing.
Overhead a sun sets in the West, purplish-orange gray spreading to merge with the faint pinkish-yellow sun rising in the East. Clouds often obscure the multitude of stars in the darkened sky but then disperse to reveal the moon in all it's phases.
An ancient hourglass sits alongside the nest, the sand constantly shifting, minute particles escaping through the hairline crack in the glass which occurred when the creature deliberately swung it's spiky tail against the time-keeping mechanism.
Also in view are the directional points of a compass such as might be seen on a map N, S, E, W. Looking closely a pulsing cord of some sort seems to run from the body of the creature, branching out until it covers each of the compass points and those in between. As each cord is traced it leads to other creatures, each as unique and fantastic as itself. The cord joins the creature to the others and also the others among themselves. In each creature no matter how different or similar they may be, the cord is attached in the same place: the heart.

Thank you for that... Definitely one of the most original and I must say perhaps my favorite. Thank you, ShadowStriker- and with this may I say you probably like the next idea for an "exhibition" we have in mind...

Wonderful! I love your family of chimeras, and assume the young ones at your house were involved in creating their own...
I was just telling a friend of mine that I like painting pictures with words. It can be difficult... but you have done a masterful job providing the look and the feeling of your chimera family, complete with "background" and a great deal of emotion.
Thanks for showing us such beautiful hearts.

Words-- better than any painting. People are able to use their imagination, what each person sees is different. And, it's beautifully written! I love it, thank you for sharing.

Nest
The branches of this tree
pulse and carry strong
the signal of your Love-
Monster proud
she guards her brood
eyes scanning always
three
curious
beasts has she
This nest
stronghold of the Heart
held high aloft
in Tree's strong arms
warmed by Sun
and held by Moon
the cycles pass too quick
it's true
The tree
to the nest
to the heart
to the four corners
of the world-
I pray
keep these monsters safe.

Wonderful! Awesome! Expessive! Words cannot communicate how I feel about the portrait which you created based on my chimera, Snipe. It is truly how I would have rendered it myself had I had the talent to do so. Tears come to my eyes as I am so touched by your gift to me, by your willingness to share your talent with me in this way. I thank you with all my heart.
Breathe deep, seek peace.

I was so astounded by the portrait that I posted my reply before commenting on the poem -- another treasure which I will hold within my heart. Again, a description which captures my attitudes and emotions regarding my chimera. Thank you for this lovely gift.

An awsome, beautiful thing... how well we see each other here, in our little community... how much we care, how much we share... this thread makes me especially happy. The inspiring chimera-description, the wonderful poem and the breath-taking illustration (posted with the aid of another person here)... beautiful.
