Amber the Velociraptor Clothing on Dinotopia Mon Oct 13 08:46:57 2003 212.250.100.13
What plants would be grown on Dinotopia for clothing. I've got a few ideas but if anyone could confirm, or add?
Cotton Hemp Coconut (but they'ds have to soften it.) Linen
Non-plant souirces could include:
Wool (combed from mammoths in the Forbiodden Mountains) Feathers-perhaps down from young dinos, or birds or natural mould from Archaeoptyrex (they are there, look at the florist in one of the pics in ALAFT)
Alan Dean Foster suggested using parts of a creature once it had died was respectful, so what about this (controversial, I know) leather from Forbidden Mountains mammals, and dino-skin leather from doinosaurs? I imagine it mught be like Donor Cards: the dinos that wish to allow this leave written instructions saying so.
Watch for a story on this later!
BD, RF, SP,
Amber
Stouthorn Regarding Leather Tue Oct 14 11:15:44 2003 209.49.43.10
It's controversial, I know, and a bit morbid and perhaps just plain gross to us, but we have to remember that they're culture is not our culture. I'm sure the saurians and mammals realize the human need for such materials.
I wonder how exactly these materials are collected. And what about those dinosaurs that go to the World Beneath to die?
Storm there's something on that in ALAFT (nm) Mon Oct 13 23:01:39 2003 24.103.87.124

Well one Plant that you've forgotten is :

Since some of the brass are entertaining the thought of making the Stomp a costume fair, I thought I should move this thread back up. Interestingly, Slash's story at the OMB got me thinking. Jeans as we are familiar with them exists by the time Arthur and Will get to Dinotopia. Remember in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn? The two crooks wear canvas pants. This is essentially a precursor to jeans. The modern form of jeans were made in the 1870s when Levi Strauss patented a way to put rivets on denim jeans' stress points on workmens' overalls, i.e. jeans. So, it's almost okay to wear jeans! ;D Anyway, here's a link to fashion examples so you guys who are going to the Stomp can get some ideas about your costumes. FASHIONHave fun! I'll go through it later and post some interesting tidbits. - Aric

I get the impression that the majority of Dinotopian clothing dates from the Renaissance era and later. At least when it comes to European styles of clothing. I think it's especially noticeable in the dress of some of the youngsters. Like Zeke from Bonabba in TWB and a couple of those kids in Waterfall City in the scene where the Apatosaurus walks up the large outdoor steps. Some of you may have yonger siblings going to the Stomp. Assuming they aren't old enough to be embarrassed as heck, you could dress them up in that fashion. Mwahahahaha! LOL! Seriously though, you might want to consider browsing some costume shops if you have any and look for stuff that is geared towards renaissance fairs. If there aren't any in your area and you think you might like the renaissance look for yourself or your kids/siblings you can google for some online renaissance stores. It'll probably be more expensive than if you buy locally or even make it yourself. *looks at Vorchia* The link I posted to has some do-it-yourself stuff, like shoes and hats and stuff. If you can do that yourselves, then more power to you. If you can't, then there are always costume shops. And never be afraid to mix and match eras. Remember, Dinotopia is the Land Apart from Time. Linear time in the way we think of it doesn't really hold. Looking at the Waterfall City council scene, those members in the red and green coats and tri-corn hats seem to harken to the 17th and 18th centuries. And of course, you can never go wrong with peasant attire. Of course, that depends on how much of an occasion you want this to be. Do you want to look like a regular serf or tavern wench? Or something a little more colorful like some semi-fictional folk figure. I just mentioned the Renaissance because, to me, that's the earliest the the attire in Dinotopia seem to go. Feel free to look across all eras. The links I post to go from pre-Classical up to the modern era, though for the purposes of the Stomp, you probably shouldn't go beyond the mid-19th century. BTW, is there going to be somebody taking pictures and stuff the way FireBane and Snipe did for the DC Convention? - Aric EDIT - I found some links to online businesses that sell period stuff. FairewareTudor ShoppeYou might want to do your own google search. Also, you might want to look at Amazon.com. I saw some renaissance dresses that appeared to be fairly cheap.

Nice subject.... YOu all have noticed I've been a little less frequently around? Well thats because I got a brand new toy and have been distracted. I got a sewing machine!!!!! I'm going to figure out how to sew stuff. I'm working on a little purse now, my sister already wants to have it. lol Yesterday I went to a shop with an enormous selection of stuff from cloth to beads and well, anything. They even have all sorts of patterns and some ready made stuff. There were some beautiful gala dresses too, one of which light purple which I think Az would have loved as it was absolutely perfect, very simple with some embroidery on the front piece of the body. I spent a while wandering around and they have the perfect thinbgs for a Dinotopia costume... Too bad I can't go. (I live in the Netherlands, I can't just hop over for a weekend in the middle of the semester and I'm already eating into my saved money right now with the driving lessons....) But they have so much stuff... I might have to focus my attention on that T-shirt design contest. Mwahahaha. Talking about jeans cloth, it could very well be made on Dinotopia. If you look at the Chandara picture, there's a lady standing on the balcony, her dress does have that color of blue, it could easily be a dress of jeans cloth with cotton sleeves. About the mention of feathers being used for decoration, there are several dinosaurs wearing some feather-thing on their necks in the books. They do have a barter system, any feathered creature could collect the loose feathers and use them for trade. Why wouldn't they? Other things that could be used for decoration are seeds, seashells, pieces of wood, clay, glass, (gem)stones, embroidery, metal... Maybe they even have silk, the climate is good enough for it. Now lets just hope mr Denison managed to get a sewing machine factory set up and we're set. Az knows whats she is wearing already? I want to know! You lucky, lucky people, I miss those thrift shops, I have to pay full price for everything!!! God knows I want thrift shops... If anyone here feels like starting a business, come to the Netherlands and start me a thriftshop? Pretty please?? Aric, those links are great... Are you going to create yourself a costume? I would like to go but my expenses for this year are really getting too high for comfort. Besides, Az might come visit in summer and I'll need some money for that too. I know I'd want a dress if I could attend..... lol But its not going to happen. Besides, we don't ahve rennaisance fairs here so I'd never get to wear it.

I'm going to figure out how to sew stuff. I'm working on a little purse now, my sister already wants to have it. lol Hey, that link will come in handy. You can make some of your own clothes. Yesterday I went to a shop with an enormous selection of stuff from cloth to beads and well, anything. They even have all sorts of patterns and some ready made stuff. There were some beautiful gala dresses too, one of which light purple which I think Az would have loved as it was absolutely perfect, very simple with some embroidery on the front piece of the body. Is this like a craft store? I spent a while wandering around and they have the perfect thinbgs for a Dinotopia costume... Oh? Like what? Too bad I can't go. (I live in the Netherlands, I can't just hop over for a weekend in the middle of the semester and I'm already eating into my saved money right now with the driving lessons....) Where is this store? If you look at the Chandara picture, there's a lady standing on the balcony, her dress does have that color of blue, it could easily be a dress of jeans cloth with cotton sleeves. Yeah. The basic idea for jeans (or canvas as it was traditionally called, I think) has been around since the Aryans (indo-europeans). About the mention of feathers being used for decoration, there are several dinosaurs wearing some feather-thing on their necks in the books. They do have a barter system, any feathered creature could collect the loose feathers and use them for trade. Why wouldn't they? I could imagine an alcoholic avian trading its feathers for booze. LOL! Az knows whats she is wearing already? I want to know! I think that's a state secret or something like that. I guess we'll find out when people post pics from the Stomp. You lucky, lucky people, I miss those thrift shops, I have to pay full price for everything!!! God knows I want thrift shops... If anyone here feels like starting a business, come to the Netherlands and start me a thriftshop? Pretty please?? Well, that's certainly a niche market for you to exploit. Aric, those links are great... Are you going to create yourself a costume? Unfortunately, I'm not going. EDIT - If it did go, however, I'd probably dress up like the Waterfall City Council members that you see in TWB. I always liked 18th/19th Century costumes. What kind of dress would it be? - Aric

I guess its like a craft store yes, you can buy all sorts of supplies. They have next to anything. Its also the only shop I can find in the area that has hairclips for decorating. Its not a large shop but its crammed to the ceiling, complete with several ladders so you can get at the merchandise thats up over your head. For Dinotopia clothing they have everything. Even leaf skeletons (I think they're made of plastic though) which look very delicate and pretty and would be great. Then they have buttons, ribbons, beads and other small stuff in all shapes, colors and materials.... Also textile paints, glitters, lining, embroidery stuff, string etc... I'm no business person... I don't know what kind of dress yet, I'd have to figure something out, something long that makes me look thinner.

Its not a large shop but its crammed to the ceiling, complete with several ladders so you can get at the merchandise thats up over your head. Yeah, the US has lots of stores like that. Not necessarily crammed. Just craft stores. I wonder why? For Dinotopia clothing they have everything. Even leaf skeletons (I think they're made of plastic though) which look very delicate and pretty and would be great. Then they have buttons, ribbons, beads and other small stuff in all shapes, colors and materials.... Also textile paints, glitters, lining, embroidery stuff, string etc... Maybe I ought to visit a craft store more often... Might give me more ideas on Dinotopian costumes. I'm no business person... Shucks. And I'll bet your advisors (or whoever looks over your schedule) probably wouldn't let you take some introductory business courses... I don't know what kind of dress yet, I'd have to figure something out, something long that makes me look thinner. Well, when you know, tell us. Unless its that Tudor Shoppe dress thing you showed us on the Choccy Raptor chat. - Aric

I don't know why the store is crammed but I like it. They really have an impossible amount of stuff in a limited space. Its great, its almost as crammed as Azonthus's closet and I've seen that closet... There was no cubic millimetre of space left unused. As I explained in the Intelligent Design tread, in school here you get set classes and set schedules with no deviations beyond what you require for at the education you chose, in my case molecual biology. SO there is no taking any language or business or history, I'll have what is required according to how the school wishes to present it. They are however making good progress at making the new Bachelor Master system work so now you can choose a minor and a major. About the dress, I don't have to pick a costume for a STOMP I won't attend. Maybe I'll figure something out later. I'm not going to waste forever staring at dresses. Its fun for an hour but it gets boring after a while.

Okay, so who is going to the Stomp in costume? Azonthus is, but she's not telling us what her costume is. BOOOO!!!! Anyone else? Need help with your choices or anything? Cuz you know, some of us who aren't going would like to live vicariously through you folks. Also, will there be someone to take piccies and stuff? It would be nice to see what actually happens. - Aric

Az will take digital camera pictures and upload them. I think she knows her kinderegg supply depends on it so it is beyond question that she will do her very best. In fact there will probably be pictures taken by many of the attendants which then can be used on a site or something. That and I have no doubt that everything shall be discussed at the OMB and here. Aric, we do have a T-shirt design contest on our hands you know? We can send in our entries to make sure we're not entirely forgotten. ;D

hey, I will definitly be going and yes, I will be attending in costume.....I just haven't figured out what yet. I know that i want it to be colorful and not drab, have a little beadwork, (which i can do myself) and make it myself. Other than that, I can't tell you as of yet. I will keep you all updated though. And i have a wicked aim with my camera so i will definitly be taking pictures. I have several scrapbooks that i have created over the years and i intend to create a whole scrapbook just for the STOMP so anyone going, beware, I have a camera and am aiming to shoot! I only post the good ones though and keep the bad ones for my private stash for when I need a good laugh!
