Eh hem! I take a lot of offense from that! Anne McCaffrey does not sue EVERY person for writing about dragons! NOwhere have I seen mention of people sued by her. She is actually very open about people writing in her world, as I have done many times. She just has a few simple rules about it, like every good writer wishing to preserve their work! She would just hasve people who write in her word, to leave out the characters from her books, and as those are hers, I don't see why thats a big problem. The reason I talked about law suits concerning Benden Weyr, is because Anne would rather people who write or RP not do so in Benden Weyr or Ruatha Hold, as those two places have been written in by her that she feels a stronger connection to them than the rest of HER planet! I think that she is one of the most amazing writers I have ever had the fortune to read, right up there on James Gurneys heels, and I take serious offence to people who diss her openly like that. What short story did you read? Because Pern has so MUCH history, that reading one short story wouldn't be enough!

I was talking to some of theses people that have theses online weyrs and some of them were sued because McCaffrey said that they copied her dragons and ideas. So that's why most weyr site are so strict with there rules and how you should write your stories.

well those sites are not approved by Anne beforehand. She just wants to make sure those who write in her world do it properly and with her permission

I don't need her permission to write a story as long as I don't use any of her places or names. I made up my own story with my own places and names. And that's why the online weyr sites have there own words and ideas so she can't say or do squat about it. Just like the weyr I did my story in. They keep off her property, and she can't say anything about it. Even if the idea is based on her ideas. Just like copywriters. If you do a work that based on others but use your own ideas, places and, names. The copyright holder can't say or do anything to you. You see this a lot with the music you here on the radio. There is a local Christian band from Pittsburgh who take music and dose a spoof of that song. They change the words so to it so they can't get into trouble. This is legal too. Did you ever heard of Weird Al Yankavick?

Very nice story Sil I can use some of the ideas you have in there for the new Dragon RP plot.
My Dragon Character is based of the AD&D and Dragonriders of Pern series. Yes, I read 7 of the Pern books and, I also wrote a candidate story for a Pernese Dragon too. (With help from Vira). I got a blue Pernese Dragon named Thelith, you can check out the story here if you wish. after readying 2 book i lost interest in it.

Eh hem! I take a lot of offense from that! Anne McCaffrey does not sue EVERY person for writing about dragons! NOwhere have I seen mention of people sued by her. Check the previous posts. She is actually very open about people writing in her world, as I have done many times. She just has a few simple rules about it, like every good writer wishing to preserve their work! And as I have said before, it violates the spirit of Fair Use. She would just hasve people who write in her word, to leave out the characters from her books, and as those are hers, I don't see why thats a big problem. You can also say the entire WORLD of Pern is hers. Of course, she does ask people who read her stuff to become emotionally invested in the exact same characters and places that she so loves. And pay money for it. And of course, I don't mind if she profits off her work, but the idea that the integrity of her characters or those particular places will be somehow marred by some pimply kids putting out fanfiction is ridiculous. McCaffrey is, apparently, among the many people trying to smother Fair Usage in American copyright laws. It may not matter for Pern, but I find it to be a rather important issue in general. The reason I talked about law suits concerning Benden Weyr, is because Anne would rather people who write or RP not do so in Benden Weyr or Ruatha Hold, as those two places have been written in by her that she feels a stronger connection to them than the rest of HER planet! Again, Fair Use. Look it up. I think that she is one of the most amazing writers I have ever had the fortune to read, right up there on James Gurneys heels, and I take serious offence to people who diss her openly like that. Should I reiterate my own offense at her silly idea that people can't even explore her characters or even those places. Again, I don't see what her problem really is. As long as they're not profiting from their fanfiction and they give her credit for creating the whole shebang, I don't see why she has to go around like an ogre and prosecuting her freakin FANS. I'm sorry if I offended you, but the universes that I like don't have creators who are THAT hissy. What short story did you read? Because Pern has so MUCH history, that reading one short story wouldn't be enough! It was in an anthology. I don't quite remember the title. In any case, my judgement on Pern isn't JUST on that short story. It's more on the fundamental idea behind Pern, and most other outright fantasy franchises that I really don't like. You know, the part about regression. - Aric

I'm sorry I snapped. I just REALLY like her World and what she created, and you did go a little overboard saying she sues EVERYONE who writes about dragons. Just those who miswrite in her world. And you may no like her, but I do, and I don't like it when she is dissed in public. But read her rules on her website and maybe you'll see what I mean.

Yea right, even she breaks her own rules.
After hearing that she sues her own fans I stopped reading her books. I hate people like that. If they are going to be like that then, I don't want any part of it at all. I'll stick to my own little world thank you.

I've read several of the books so yes I know what Pern is and how it works. I wouldn't want to buy them for anything though I do not even take them when they are offered to me for free. Like Aric already stated, authors shouldn't be THAT hissy. If they don't want their creations to get used, they should reconsider publication. Sueing the ones who buy your books and like your stories is, by my book called biting the hand that feeds you. I will not help anyone who would do sucha thing by buying their stuff. Fanfiction and and fanart come with succesful writing. I think the best way to deal with it is to see it as the compliment it IS. Why sue someone for being inspired by your work?? Its silly! I've never heard of JK Rowling or the Tolkien family sueing fans. If you look at any art or fanart page you will know those books are some of the most popular, perhaps THE most popular books to fanartists. And believe me while scrolling through LOTR fanfiction you come across very bad stories, nasty stories, disturbing stories and Mary Sue Leggy trash. Does the Tolkien family sue for the misusage of THE Fantasy book of our time or for the abusing of the chacters and locations? They do not. And Anne mc Caffery's writing is of course nothing compared to Tolkien's but whose is? The books read away easily and are amusing enough to read so its not very bad either. I actually liked the more science fiction-ish book best, the one where the planets inhabitants have just arrived and their advanced technology is still there...
Just make sure you obey whatever rules need to be obeyed, if we get into trouble because of that dragon RP or any story, I will be forced to delete anything as I can't afford a lawyer and neither can Azonthus.

Here's a solution to that. Don't even mention her name or her creation or world and she can't say or do squat. And base your stories/RPs on something else like AD&D or something. I will not mess with someone WHO breaks there own rules and copyright laws.
cya,
P.S. You don't have to worry about it. I don't think she knows about this place, Or even gets on the net that much with her busy life and all.

I found an online weyr a few months back, called Golden Gate Weyr. I impressed a brown dragon named Menith there. Oh, BTW Dwaggie, I checked out the site where you got your dragon. Those Ryslen dragons are cool! Wish Golden Gate had reds...

Dwaggie, I've been considering becoming a candidate at Ryslen. I have some questions though. Do you need your own web page to Impress a dragon? And what does it mean when they say in the rules, you need to get your dragon's stage up within one week? What is a stage? Hope you can answer my questions.
