Elephants, lions to roam North America again? Plan to reintroduce large mammals, ecological history parks By Robert Roy Britt Senior writer Updated: 1:22 p.m. ET Aug. 17, 2005 Cheetahs, lions, camels and elephants would roam wild in the United States under a new proposal to re-introduce large animals similar to those that humans hunted to extinction long ago. The U.S. Ecological History Park, as it is billed by scientists, would help preserve species that are under increasing pressure for survival in Africa. It would also re-create a more balanced predator-prey relationship in the Great Plains and Southwest, an ecological diversity that has been absent for more than 10,000 years thanks at least in part to hunting pressure. Source and more: www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8983461/While I can see atleast some of the benfits, I get the feeling that there would be quite a few problems, opposition from the local communities included.

Can you imagine what farmers and livestock herders would do? They'd crap their pants if those kinds of predators were re-introduced.
Besides, they'd just go extinct or endangered again due to hunting and poaching.

Exactly. If they are contained, people wouldn't have such a problem with it.
But, you know, modern lions and such are not native to North America, and I don't think they'd like living here all that much, whether contained or not, simply because it's not the type of environment they are used to. They are used to plains in Africa - not forests and mountains in the U.S.A.

well, there are places in the US akin to African savannah, I happen to live in one of those places, northern Texas. Man, if one of those got out, somone would kill it, be it a poacher or a rancher. Besides, what the hell do we need big game for? I'm happy with horses thank you very much.
