>first off- feel free to join in wherever!<
For me, Califf, it begins after meeting Zenith and Apex on the Dragonfly Coast. Zenith and his skybax Apex conducted me to Waterfall City where I was read in as a citizen of the country. After having stayed in Waterfall City for a while working at the local museum; I decided it was time to go searching for the temple ruins located along the Backbone Mountains.

The Temple Ruins should reveal alot of how Dinotopia got its religious start as well as maybe shed insight into its distant and violent past. How was Dinotopia made? -These were some of my initial thoughts as I set out for the Temple Ruins. Tonight though I will rest and get a list of provisions for the journey. I do want to travel light though as I will be going through the Rainy Basin to get there.

Ok, what I need; a good pair of hiking boots, a change of clothes, a knapsack, a notebook, some writing utensils, and of course my trusty rock hammer (for geological investigations). Some rope would be good, and some fire starting implements. It will probably take me all day to get these resources together. I'll set out tomorrow for the Ruins.
Still being relatively new to Dinotopia he was craving meat, but knew the codes and so would try his hand at foraging. There was good food to be had in Dinotopia's wildernesses.

With list in hand, Califf sets out for some of the local shops in Waterfall City.
One of the most important things to remember is quality. It is no good if it won't last the duration of the expedition. I also need a quality map of the area so as to not get lost.

Califf started at the local clothing store first to look for some of the best backwoods clothing that Dinotopia could fashion. He found a really sturdy set of cargo pants and a nice coat that seemed to be durable for such a long expedition. He also got a backpack, much like a schoolbag and was able to throw everything that he had acquired into it. He then went to the library for a good map to the Ruins.

Yesterday he had gotten everything he needed and more. He was definitely ready to set out on his journey today from Waterfall City to the Temple Ruins. He wanted to meet up with one of his friends first to discuss the route and possible alternatives.
So he set of for his sector of the city right away. He didn't want to waste to much daylight today in Waterfall City; besides the road was calling him, always...

Well, his friend was unable to meet up with him today to discuss the best routes. But, Califf was not deterred. He had planned on leaving today, and if the forecasters were to be believed, this was the best time. So he headed for the outskirts of town and then onto the Rainy Basin. Upon arriving at the edge of the city he turned back and surveyed the scene before him. "I will return with a better understanding of what caused all of this society to be built," he silently swore to himself, and with that promise he headed into the Rainy Basin.

He started making his way through the thick forest and stopped about 10 miles in to set up a makeshift camp in a tree. He picked a good looking sturdy one that seemed to be out of the way of the normal hunting trails of the carnosaurs in the area. He then did his best to blend in with the surroundings and settled down for the night. "No use in getting careless on the first day," he thought as he was arguing with himself about whether all this was necessary.

Waking up the next morning was very peaceful. There wasn't much sound other than the wind in the trees and the occasional birdsong. So, after breakfast he struck out in the the Ruins' direction once again.

Califf traveled all day. He finally stopped after walking about twenty miles. He was hungry. There were some plants nearby and so he was able to make himself a feast. Well as much a feast he had every had in the Rainy Basin... After eating, as can be expected, he was very tired and decided to find another safe place to rest for the night. He figured it would only be a couple more days to get there as the Temple Ruins seemed to be (by the map) about 64 miles from Waterfall City.

He climbed up a tree as before; but this time things were not as quiet and peaceful as before. He thought he heard something in the distance. Maybe a low rumble through the ground. He had heard the stories of terrified people huddled in trees, scarcely even breathing for fear. This was all to real and too close though...

Califf was absolutely silent as a group of torvosaurs went by. He was used to seeing them as fossils at home in the museum, but now with teeth that could break apart a cow in a single bite; he had found a new respect for these ancient hunters. They stopped momentarily at the base of the tree he was in. They seemed to be searching for something... He watched as intently as a dog watches a treat. They seemed to have caught his scent! Fear was rising through him as fire rises through a skyscraper. From its beginning, he felt maybe he could handle it, but they were spending too much time there. All at once they looked at each other and then looked up. He was sure that he had been seen. Yet he stayed as still as ever. This was no time to panic. Years of studying had always taught him that the worst thing he could ever do was panic.

They started to grumble to each other. He could just make out a few words as it was important that he should study the ancient languages, especially if he was going to venture to the Temple Ruins. They were saying, "Human... up there... why alone?..." After catching that last bit he wasn't sure if they were addressing him yet, but, since he'd been discovered he figured he would have no choice but to respond- if only to make the case at why he was such an excellent meal... So doing his best to get the deeper rumbles and grumbles, he managed to say, "Traveling... to learn... beginning of carnosaurs!" He answered as honestly and clearly as he could. It was bad karma to lie to a meat-eater- especially when they could sense it...

The torvosaurs all seemed slightly miffed that a human would not have panicked at the sight of them. And even more so that he would answer so calmly now. They still were not beyond thinking of him as a tasty snack though... "No tribute...?... No fish?..." they queried at last.
Being the brave sort that he was and having observed their leader he decided that this was his best opportunity to get into good graces with their captain. He slid out of the tree and knelt on one knee before their captain and spoke as best and as strongly as he could, "How may I serve thee?" ...silence... he continued, "I have no tribute, no fish, I offer my service as tribute!"
