I took a step back and asked, "What does this mean, Life Partner?" It was slightly overwhelming to see the intense gaze that she trained on my eyes. I started looking for an escape. I then met her eyes once again, and let them sear into my soul. I had to know what she was intending for me- She stated, "Life Partner means- you-" she said pointing at me, "Pack alpha now... Best friends... Me!" She finished, gesturing back at herself.

I stumbled. But she then continued, "My name is Sunshine Quickclaw!" She stated her name with immense pride, in true carnosaurian fashion. She then waited for my reply. She looked curiously into my eyes. She almost looked like a dog that I had once. She was infinitely more capable at surviving in the wild though. She could even tear me to shreds in three seconds flat if she had so desired... I answered after a brief pause, "Califf McClure!"

I looked at her, perplexed. She just continued to stare at me with her large (beautiful) predatory eyes. My name was my name- how could it be anything different?
She then spoke after awhile, "Your name will be Moonlight Noclaw!" "Each member of our pack has a name which defines their personality and a physicality. You are as gentle as moonlight, and you have no claws! You will be forever after, as a part of our pack, Moonlight Noclaw!"

I felt a chill run through my whole body- I was now a part of a pack of Utahraptors; not just a part of, but in the position of Alpha male. I had a new name given to me, a new position, a new way of life. This was all very sudden and final, yet, at the same time, exciting and new!
At first I just thought my name. I then whispered it, then I shouted it with all the pride an Alpha male Utahraptor should be saying their name. "MOONLIGHT NOCLAW!!!"

The whole pack of Utahraptors started jumping around excitedly- They were pleased with their new leader whom would be able to teach them the ways of the humans. I did notice a few challenging glances, but I could deal with these later. I just continued to brood over my new name and life while my pack of raptors started to settle down. What would be the life of a human male, now an alpha utahraptor? I knew that physically, I would never be a match for even the weakest of them. Yet it was not my physical prowess that had caused me to be in this new situation...

I noticed that Sunshine Quickclaw stayed by my side the rest of the night to let it be known that we were equals. I felt that no one would ever challenge me with her by my side. This brought a level of comfort, yet, I knew that she may not always be right there. But, for tonight she was, we were the Alphas, we would be respected, the first to eat, and the last to go to sleep; excepting the night watch.

The night watch we chose from some of the most loyal of the pack. I had a feeling that she was nervous about the situation as well. I felt that everything would be better in the morning though, so after we had eaten, and the rest of the pack was now drifting off to sleep, I retired to our area of the camp with my new Life Partner, and we slept near each other till the morning.

The next morning I awoke to her eyes staring at me. The other members of our pack had set about gathering firewood and some meat for our morning meal. No one would dare eat their meals before we had had ours. So I went over to the pile of wood and gathered a few pieces, which I started a fire with and started cooking the meat. After I had my fill, as well as Sunshine Quickclaws', we went to an overlook and watched as the rest of our pack ate the remnants.

She then turned to me and said, "Now we must know what is at our ancestors' ancient temple." "It may help us know what has happened between us. Why we are Life Partners." All I could do was nod in agreement. I had never heard of saurian Life Partners happening with a carnivore before. I had been in Dinotopia for not too long, yet, this somehow felt very unprecedented...

On arriving at the temple, we noticed that the area surrounding was devoid of any signs of creatures nearby. This must be a sacred place I thought to myself. i decided to ask Sunshine if there were any rituals we should observe before entering the temple.

"Temple old, sacred... we need to wash claws and teeth before entering." "No aggression in temple."
There was an old wash basin nearby that seemed to have been used for this purpose. I could see the ancient claw and teeth marks of probably a hundred different creatures on the rim of the old stone wash basin. I quickly washed my hands, feet, and mouth to show proper respect. Sunshine followed me. The rest of the pack then followed her.

As we then entered the temple, I noticed a huge relief lining the hallway that lead to the main courtyard. As I studied it, I noticed that humans and carnivores, and even herbivores, were all living in harmony. I noticed that the carnivores were eating meat with the humans, and the humans were eating meat and vegetables! The original inhabitants of Dinotopia must not have been strictly vegetarian... And everybody was getting along!

What could this all mean? This could, in theory, turn Dinotopia on its head. Peace with the carnivores? Was it even possible now? I had to know what had happened all those years ago to turn humans vegetarian and only towards the herbivores... Why had the carnivores been so ostracized?
