Well, on one of my worlds there are three catagories of dragon; Dragon, Dragon Kin and Dragon Child/ren.
"True" Dragons are elemental creatures that were once mortal beigns millenia ago, but each of the major species were going extinct, so they made a pact with the seven elements (yes, there is magic and stuff on this world, so they aren't "real", except to those who live there, heh) and became the living, imortal representatives of the seven elements. (Apperance wise, each species looks quite different, but most have them have the most in common with chinese dragons)
Dragon Kin are the myriad of species distantly related to the elemental Dragons back when they were mortal, which include pretty much every possible kind of mythical earth dragon creatures, plus ones never heard of on earth at all. Wyverns, the 'heraldic' types of dragon, wyrms.... My mind is blanking for the moment on more, but you get the idea, I hope.
Dragon Child/ren (either works fine, depending on context) are the closest in relation to the elemental Dragons. Since 'true' Dragons are immortal, they cannot have more children among themselves, but with shapechanging added in, those who wanted children were able to mix their genes with other species (theoreticly, it could have been about any species, but only the ones that are part human muliplied well enough to be counted a species.) There are seven (of course, one for each element) species of Dragon Child, though three of them are quite rare, and while I'm still working on them (some have forms and names, some just forms, and some neither, yet) there are for sure several sub-species of each of the dragonchildren from the enviromental elements (there are enviromental and spiritual) each of which is which is particularly suited to the local conditions of where they live. For example the Drakae (Water Element) have Arctic, Deep/Open Ocean, Reef/Coastal, River, and Lake, each of which have physical characteristics and coloring that make them fit in perfectly with their living conditions. Some examples of the differances being; Deep/Open Ocean Drakae are the largest, with the best endurance, Arctic Drakae are the slimest and most manuverable/flexible, Lake Drakae are the smallest and have the dullest coloring, with almost non of the shimmer in their scales that the other species have, Reef/Coastal Drakea have to deal with tides all the time and thus have the most muscle... Well, there's lots more then that, but thats some basic examples. Yes, I've put the most thought into that species of the seven, one of my major characters is a Reef/Coastal Drakae. (Drakae are NOT to be confused with mermaids and Sirens... just because all three are part human and live in water doesn't make them much alike, let alone the same. It's a touchy point between them and land dwellers...)
I have a few other worlds with dragons (I'll say now, Leethran two-winged Dragons came first, the ones of +can't remember the name right now+ inspired the creator (who also helped create Leethra) to have more of them on other worlds) all of which I try to have be unique in some way, and anatomicly beleivable for those who don't nitpick the details (no insult meant to the people in this thread... or those who make it a hobby) Besides, there is usually magic involved too, which mildly makes anatomicly correct not nessisary, take chinese dragons that could fly without wings.... +will forever have the decorated arch of one chinese restaurant I went to alot has a little kid come to mind, with it's mirrored dragons in the clouds, when the words 'chinese' and 'dragon' are in the same sentance+
I'll let you all get back to your hopefully more interesting lives, now.
