Wood Turtle
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the Home of the Turtle
For Greg, with thanks for the gift of this experience.
Your passion shines bright: a gift to Our World.
I stand at the edge of the pond
And take it in,
With eyes ready for Spring.
Dark water,
Which holds the blues of the sky above
Browns of mud within
Greens of small plants and short grasses
Rimming its edge.
Briefly,
The sun dances across its surface
Then retreats behind a cloud and rests;
And the cloud is encircled with a ribbon of light.
Skunk cabbage,
Freshly emerged,
Break the pond's surface
And dot the surrounding Earth.
The mud beneath
Waits,
Concealed in part by tiny plants
Last year's leaves
And dry brush:
Nature's booby trap.
The stream
A glint of moving water
Through the trees ahead.
The turtle is near;
This is his home.
As my eyes hold the water's sparkle,
It's scent, carried on the wind,
Brushes my face
Sharing secrets of the cool rock
And new green
And wet earth
Of this place of turtles.
I feel a tug
Upon my heart;
The lure of a place
Where clear water
Strokes smooth the small rocks.
Where droplets spark into the air
Dissolving into wind
Which caresses my face,
Invades my lungs,
Lingers as a taste in my throat,
Absorbs into my body
And nourishes my spirit.
Stepping forward,
I am held in place.
My foot sinks deeply into cool mud,
Which holds me:
The booby trap revealed.
My shoe,
Filled with sticky wetness,
Is left behind:
A gentle teasing from the Earth
Reminding me to look at where I am;
To stand in awe
Inside this poem
The turtle's home.
I sit
Resting my back upon the Earth
My eyes to the Sky,
Now bright with the retreat of cloud cover.
Sunlight catches the silver curls
Of a birch tree's bark;
Shiny feathers of wood
Capturing the Sun.
This tree which shares the turtle's home:
One Word in the Prayer
Which surrounds me.
And I yield to the power of it:
To this gentle lover,
Who holds me softly on damp ground,
Teasing my hair with fingers of wind,
Wrapping me in a blanket of Peace.
I am of this Earth
This muddy ground
This crunch of leaves
This snap of twigs
Movement of branches,
Wetness of air
Skim of moss
Blue of sky
Smell of new grass...
I am a Word in this Prayer,
Which contains all
Including the turtle.

Beautiful, Kami. In return for the gift of the experience which Greg gave to you, I can see that you have given him the gift of a poem to be treasured in his heart, a gift of feelings and senses and vivid imagery.
The inclusion here of your picture and the picture of the turtle serve to heighten the imagery contained within the poem. Thank you for sharing this part of yourself with us.
Breathe deep, seek peace.

Fully imersed in your words
I'm taken to a place
Where all can experience and ponder
On the things that really matter
These creatures
Four-legged and defensible to go
Hide from the site of our kind
Its O.K. we say
We aren't here to hurt
Will you please trust us?
We are only here to nuture you and your world
The turtle inclines its head
In a notion of understanding
It makes a series of noises
As if to say
Thankyou Kami and Greg
For your generous and loving
nature.
**stunning poem, Kami; thanks for sharing**

Your poem was no less stunning than mine, Houkan my friend... and I had the inspiration of the woods and of the turtle to guide me. Thanks so much for these words; you have touched me deeply. I copied your poem and sent to Greg, and I know he'll feel the same.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To hear the call-
as subtle as a tree's whisper
turning your back on all this
to enter
their world
As absolute
an enviroment
man cannot come close
to the tactile sublime
that teases
with each step
The target of the hunt
smiles to itself
as your presence
is known for miles-
The turtle
is unimpressed
with it's stalkers
turns with a Hurrumph
and plods ahead
determined
This world of mud and trees
threatens to consume
utterly
leaving no trace
of the outside world-
You are calmly serene
at the prospect
allowing the mud
to taste you
The turtle-
this little tank
a perfect unit
of self contained wonder
allows itself
to be caught
in order to investigate
these strange invaders
chuckling at their
poor overall design
You leave this realm
infused with such-
sensations
memories
humility
wonder
The turtle smiles
and walks on.

It is quite a different perspective to see things from the turtle's point of view. Very creative!
