*pat pat* You poor thing. Well it seems there's quite a number of people around here who are taking some summerclasses or even skip the break completely. I myself am going on with the Spanish during summer because if don't I will forget it all.
Of course I also have plenty of time to sit in the sunshine with the obligatory glass of lemonade with a straw while pondering the amounts of homework people like you get to endure... Ahhh life is good...
No seriously, I'll spend five weeks be working at an old people's home cleaning rooms. Lets hope they have airco because we're having a bit of a heat wave over here.

WELL AT LEAST NOW ITS ONLY SIX DAYS. *SHRUGS* AND I SUPPOSE IT COULD BE WORSE... AT LEAST IT ISN'T RAINING.
GRR... I WISH IT WAS RAINING. ANYWAY, ANY IDEAS ON HOW TO KEEP FROM BUSY FROM THE BOREDOM? I FIGURE I'VE READ HALF THE LIBRARY (AND ALL MY DINOTOPIA BOOKS AT LEAST TWICE), SPENT TOO MUCH TIME AT THE GYM, AND ROTTED AWAY MY BRAIN IN FRONT OF THE TV.

Hey! Happy Summer, Longtime No See!!
We've been going through a massive heat wave lately, which sucks, the humidity is through the roof and it feels like 110 degrees, when it's really only 98-99.
As for summer classes, I understand completely, I enrolled in a six-week Mandarin course. What a mess!
Enjoy! Enit

FOUR DAYS! WHICH LEADS ME TO ASK... WHAT YOU ARE THINKING? THAT'S BRAVE TAKING THAT ON WHAT IS RIGHTFULLY SUMMER VACATION. I second THAT... I'm so glad its only Spanish I'm taking and not Mandarin/Latin/Russian/Arabian or anything else really difficult. Enit, what madness posessed you to take Mandarin, was it the heat? But welcome back to the T of P! It feels like 110? Whoaa... I don't think I've experienced temperatures THAT high, 100 F is managable, 110 may be too much for me.

Yeah, I'm a loony... I'll agree... I'm minoring in Chinese, So I figured I might as well get a head start.
The heat is pretty much done with here, now we have a tropical storm passing over... The weather hates me.
And I visit the ToP reguraly, I just rarely ever post.

You're minoring in Chinese?? Good luck with that, its a pretty original choice. I don't think I know anyone else who wants to minor (or major) Chinese.

IS IT TOUGH TO LEARN? STUPID QUESTION MAYBE... BUT I'VE ALWAYS WANTED TO LEARN IF NOT JUST TO KNOW EXACTLY WENT INTO MY CHINESE FOOD, THEN TO USE IN MY TRAVELS.

BDSP "VERITAS" STINKTOOTH IIRC, Chinese grammar is very similar to that of English. So in that regard, it should be easy. However, the two things that put me off Chinese was the tonal inflection you need to differentiate some words as well as the writing system. One character represents one word and you need to know at least several hundred of them (all of them unique, mind you) to articulate yourself in writing. I stuck with languages that use the Roman alphabet; first Spanish then French. - Aric

That's too bad about summer school. I took it one year and don't plan to ever again if I can help it. You know what did help to get through it? That was the summer that I discovered Dinotopia! Enit, you said 98-99 degrees? That's just like the weather has been here in the Ozarks. Hot and terrible humid and to make things worse, it really was 105 a couple days last week! That's what our thermameter read and I live in the woods with lots of shade. I can't imagine what it was in town with all the blacktop and vehicles! Chinese? Good luck! My brother tried to learn it once and actually stuck with it for a long time, but I think he got discouraged because through all that time he only succeeded in learning to speak a few words correctly.

Aric pretty much has the difficulties of Mandarin covered... but if you really put your mind to it, it's not that difficult. I feel its easier than French or Spanish because you don't have to worry about congregation... but that may be offset by the thousands of characters you have to memorize. It's also taxing on the eyes to read it because there are no spaces between words.
As for the weather, yesterday was brutal... 100 degrees and the humidity was oppressive. The heat index was sky-high... something like 115 or so...
