Why Dinotopia?

Hey everyone! So sorry for not having been around too much lately. Life has been getting in the way;) Well… Not exactly in the way; I’ve just been spending a LOT of time with my boyfriend because it’s looking like we’ll only get to see each other once a week when he gets his new job because he’ll be moving over an hour away. Still, it’ll be great news if he does get that job- really, really good news;)
Anywho, I was just noticing that there are a lot of new dolphinbacks here since I have returned from my last self-imposed computer ban. Welcome to all the newbies! I hope you enjoy your stay on our shores and will stay for a while. Feel free to jump in on any conversations going on and to even start your own=)
My question, and the main point of this post, is Why Dinotopia? What is so fascinating about it for you? What is it about a world where dinosaurs and humans live together that brings you back to it again and again? I’ll give you guys my response once I hear a few of yours!

and a utopic society existing in harmony that's always just gotten to me. that and Mr Gurney's art. He is a genius. There are a lot of artists I see who have a little more technical skill or can put a little bit more meaning into their art, but his is truly one of a kind for both storytelling and technical mastery. The vivid landscapes he portrays have always allowed me to populate and characterise the place with my own imagination to an extent I can do with no other fantasy setting (save perhaps warhammer, my other great love)
Second, I have always loved dinosaurs, and sentient dinosaurs is just too cool for words. the way dinotopia portrays saurians as an infinitely different group of individuals with many similarities to humans on the surface, but a deep difference deep down is fantastic and very compelling and realistic.
and third, most importantly, it shows a vision in which humans can co-exist peacefully, with simple ways of making the world a better place. Since I first washed ashore on dinotopia, alone and friendless, I have discovered the true inner beauty of the human condition and have discovered, in that, a hope for my own future and that of my race more certain than any religion or propaganda could give me. I have learned my own code of ethics more fulfilling than any I have been told to follow and I have helped many people overcome their problems and issues through the mental fortitude and dexerity that drifting through dinotopia has taught me. For a supposedly imaginary place, it's effects have been stunningly real, and I will always maintain that dinotopia is a true place, not of earth, but of spirit. No ghost in the imagination could have such profound effects on those who visit it.
I owe a lot to dinotopia, and of course, the wonderful people who inhabit this little corner of her shores, so at this stage of my residency, to anyone who would ask 'why dinotopia' I can very honestly say 'why the heck NOT'
Oh, and just a note, yes, I do actually follow the codes as well as I can, which is all a dinotopian would expect of me. You have no idea how much good it has done me. it's easy to be jaded and to become bitter, so easy, but if you can keep as best you can to those few lines of text, plus one or two that Jesus and Muhammed and Buddah (read what they wrote, or said, they're all great chaps when you get to know them ) and of course the occasional one from monty python or george bush (both are equally hilarious and make less sense than a giant peanut jelly monkey coop with buttons) you'll live a much better life
Enough rantin for now

Even though I haven't read that many of the Dinotopia books (I get confused as to which book came first and what comes next, I like to read things in order), I love it. I've always had a facination for dinosaurs (as well as dragons), now here is a world where they coexsist with humans! Not only that, but they can talk and have their own personalities ...like people. I haven't been able to find any Dinptopia books at my school library, and my we don't usually have time to drive to the local library. But I'll look harder.

Because of its people really. It could have been any other hypothetical fandom, I never would have bothered to seriously look INTO the fandom if it hadn't been for certain people who were already IN it.
I could rant about the great art of mr Gurney and utopic societies but I'm afraid the truth is simpler then that in my case.

I hope your wrist feels better.
I'm probably going to have a hard time putting it into words, I always do with this kind of thing. But I think it's cause I've always liked dinosaurs anyway and I liked the concept of the books. Later, I got to liking the people in the fandom, too, despite the occasional troll attack.

Because I love dinosaurs!, (and dragons, but that's another story). Also, Mr. Gurney's pictures are simply beautiful, it makes you wish you could live there. I've always hoped, somewhere in the back of my mind, that Dinotopia might actually exist somewhere. In the Bermuda triangle perhaps? Hehe

In Dinotopia: Lost, the pirates that got shipwrecked were fresh out of Australia. Well, reasonably fresh. I think they were heading west too, probably north around the continent, but I'm not sure. In which case I think Dinotopia's in the Indian Ocean somewhere.

Why? Well if I really need a reason, just the place where humans and dinosaurs live together in peace is really all that you need to know. Not only do the dinosaurs and humans live together in peace, but the two can communicate and work together to build a dream world where cities are built on waterfalls and on high cliffs. Then there is the fascination of the way they live. Who wouldn't love to live a life like that? I find everything about Dinotopia to be fascinating, so there are a billion reasons.
By the way, good to see you back Azonthus. I wish you and your boyfriend good luck.

It was the beautiful artwork of James Gurney that caught my eye, and my everlasting fanatisism with dinosaurs that got me hooked.
The time and effort that had gone into Dinotopia screamed to me, *Read us! Read us!* How could I refuse? ;D
I'd also like to say that I'm sorry I haven't been around much, what with finals, school, Band, Boy Scouts,...Blah, blah, blah it's getting harder to maintain contact with all of my message boards and such.
Another thing that may have pulled me back to the OMB, would be that the Temple is down. But I plan on staying here for quite a while. I missed this place.

*grins* Nice to see all the responses here any the varried reactions! It appears that each of us has our own reasons for being here, but, as I already knew, all share a love for this beautiful island.
The reason I love Dinotopia so much and have remained here for so long is the friends and inspiration. Dinotopia inspires me so much creatively with stories and drawing and is just a fun place to escape to in my mind. James Gurney's art is so amazingly detailed and realistic that I feel I could step through the frames and into that parade or forest. Sometimes, I do step through the frames and into the pictures;) James Gurney himself is also part of the reason I stay; I have never known an artist or author who is so kind and generous to his fans. But, the number one reason I stay? All of you. I count Dinotopia as a second home because of all the wonderful people who frequent these boards. I must say, thank you to all of you who have been with me through so much and thank you to the newbies for the opportunities to make new friends!
Oh, yes, Dinotopia also helped me to realize my talent for web design and to choose my major in college. Every time I design a web page or do something with photoshop, it's because of Dinotopia;)
