Birth a surprise to everyone — including the mother
POTTSTOWN -- When Beth Hums scheduled a week of vacation from work, little did she know it would turn into part of a maternity leave -- especially since she didn’t realize she was pregnant.
And little did Hums’ husband, Bob, think he would deliver his second daughter, Natalee Elizabeth, in the couple’s bathroom around 2:30 a.m. Monday while their 18-year-old daughter, Alyson, relayed instructions from an emergency dispatcher.
"Most people thought it was a joke," said 42-year-old Hums.
She added that she didn’t experience any of the signs of pregnancy -- weight gain, a kicking baby, food cravings or the like. Also, having suffered difficulties before and during her first pregnancy, Hums said she basically had been told she would not be able to have more children.
"It’ll certainly be different this time around," she said about raising a child 18 years after having her first daughter.
"It kinda scares me because I thought I was past all this, kindergarten and braces, and I’m further in my career now than when I had Alyson," she said. "But what a little miracle."
Hums said she woke up early Monday morning to go to the bathroom when she suddenly was hit with an attack of sharp, piercing pain in her stomach and began yelling for her husband.
"I’m telling him I can’t stand up," Hums said in her hospital room at Pottstown Memorial Medical Center, as she and her 46-year-old husband described the birth to family and friends who came to see her unexpected bundle of joy.
The emergency dispatcher gave instructions for Hums to lie down until the EMTs arrived, at which point her husband discovered the baby’s head was already showing.
A few pushes later, and Natalee made her entrance into the world, Hums’ husband recounted, saying the whole incident occurred within five to 10 minutes.
Almost immediately after Natalee was delivered, the EMTs arrived and took care of Hums while her husband suctioned out the baby’s nose and mouth.
"She cried right away," Hums said.
Unable to get a stretcher up the staircase, Hums walked down to the first floor, wrapped in a T-shirt and sheet with her newborn daughter swaddled in bath towels, she said.
Though Natalee was born about a month early, she seemed to be in fine health, according to her parents, complete with all her fingers and toes, which they checked for as soon as she was born. Ironically, Beth Hums’ mother also had a baby when she was 42.
The Hums said their older daughter remained very calm during the whole incident and is helping them accommodate the new addition to the family.
"She’s excited. She always wanted a sister," Hums said.
"I don’t think I’ll be so smothering and suffocating (to Natalee), but we thought Alyson was the only child we were going to have, so I was very protective," she added.

Well, at least Lady Jess knows she's pregnant...
No surprises there....
Anyway, that's some weird stuff. I've seen a picture of here, and she ain't that fat. I mean she's definitely overweight, but not fat enough to hide a pregnancy.
Huh.
