I only read a short story in that franchise. Didn't get me interested in the Pern series since there weren't any dragons in it...
Besides, it's too much of a fantasy series for me to be interested in it. I prefer Science Fiction.
Although, I think I made a post over at the OMB arguing that the underlying premise for the Pern series was science fiction since almost everything there could be explained naturalistically.

Nope! Never read it, never intend to. I just don't like her work that much. There are too many inconsistancies, it's too confusing, and the storylines just flat out don't interest me. I'm really not too much into the sci-fi genra and prefer pure fantasy.

Science fiction is fun!!! I Like star trek!! (TNG, DS9 and some Voyager). As for mcCaffery, I read a few of her books while my brain was burned and exhausted last year. I can only read that when my brain is completely deep fried. No offense but I normally can't read any such stuff because my rbain is giving a constant scientific analysis and what mcCaffery does REALLY doesn't work... Don't get me started, really. But I'd still read any amount of her work over Auel's famous series, honestly I can seriously recommend you never, EVER pick up 'clan of the cave bear'. It goes descriptive in a way that made my stomach turn, you don't wanna know, honestly, please resume reading mc Caffery's impossible genetic manipulation experiment.

I really enjoy the older books in this series, but not so much the newer ones (after Renegades).

Oh -Ho! Do not get me started on this series! I will rattle on and on about it because I love it. Although i no longer have any of the books I used to have a bunch. My favorite ones are the Harper Hall Trilogy and i really like the newere ones taht have come out that she has written with her son. Anyone wants to hear more just say the word and i could write a ton about it. I think what gets to me the most and keeps me hooked is teh survivalist nature of the stories. Does taht make any sense? Oh well, maybe next time it will.

I've read three of them (Dragonsinger, Dragonsong and Dragondrums)and I thought they were very intruiging. The kind of dragon that she has described/created, along with it's miniature cousin, was an interesting concept in my mind. I especially love that fire lizards can SING!! I'd like to read more of them, but I'm a little confused as to the order in which her books go (such as: if she's written prequels or sub-series to the books I've already read, or if there is another trilogy that continues that story). Plus, I don't have much time anymore to stop by the library. How many Pern books has she written, anyway?

Yeah, I seen those in the bookstore in the 80's and 90's. (Passed 'em by cause they weren't my 'thing' back then!)

Aven, there are probably close to twenty books in the series now and they are all written out of order but the three that you read are the original first ones...they are teh best to start with. Yes, she has written others that come before those timeline wise but you have to read them afterwards in order to enjoy the story. If you read the beginning of the timeline first, then you ruin the suspense of the stories in the middle of the series by having your questions answered beforehand..it is alittle awkward at first to understand but the easiest way to read them is in the order that they were published. She tends to write them as either stand alone trilogys or as singles but they are each focused on a particualar group of characters or a dilemma.
As you read each set or single, you see many characters cross over or historical references made to previous books and they are truly a wonderful series if you don't mind the fact that she used a lot of creative license in the developing of the dragons and firelizards. In other words, don't bother to analyze too much and enjoy the storyline.
