She continued to gaze into Califf's eyes with her big, bright, predatory ones. She then squinted a little, seemingly to have found something within his soul that she liked. But as quick as it seemed to glint it disappeared. She then jumped high into the air and started to do the footprint language dance, "If you can read this, we may help you!"

He could just make out some of the signs. It was in their dialect, yet he was not adverse to a challenge. They circled around him as he stooped down to inspect the writing. It was ancient Dinotopian for sure. It seemed to be a message that she couldn't understand, because it said, "Beware of herbivores". He thought it rather odd, but figured his life depended upon his translation. So he looked her in the eye and said what it meant. They all started laughing hysterically! He couldn't figure what was so funny.

The leader stopped laughing after awhile and then stated, "The wisdom of our ancestors is amazing..." "Had we only listened... anyway, what to do about you though!" She directed her gaze right back at him and narrowed her eye slits, while looking down her nose, "Are you a herbivore?"
Califf knew that this was a touchy subject as most of the humans on Dinotopia were. So he started with a brief introduction, "I am not from Dinotopia, where I come from, people have no problem with eating meat. I particularly enjoy a nice juicy steak every now and then." "I have only been on Dinotopia a few years... and having stayed with the torvosaurs for a brief period, I have definitely acquired the taste of meat again!"

She stepped forward. He was sure that his answer would have helped his case, but then it was impossible to tell with carnosaurs... She once again looked intently on him, "If this is true, eat the meat you are holding!" Califf had lost his appetite since meeting the Utahraptors, but at the thought of eating, his mouth immediately started salivating! He looked at her briefly, then sunk his teeth into the juicy undercooked steak that he had brought with him. It was so juicy and good, he almost started crying!
The emotion was not lost on the Utahraptors. They each relaxed a bit and looked at him with the eyes of a parent rather than as predators who could eat a whole dinosaur alive in just minutes!

After having few more bites in order to assuage any doubts, they told him to follow them. He obviously had no choice, not that he cared, he was beginning to like all the attention. With all that had happened to him within the last few days, this request made by the Utahraptors seemed absolutely natural... They took him back to a makeshift camp. (Utahraptor style) Where the Utahraptors asked if he could start a fire.

He replied that he could and set about putting the kindling in place to get the fire started. As he was about to strike his flint, the Utahraptors started to gather around. So, he decided to make a ritual of it. He held up the two stones so that everyone could see, then explained, "From these two stones, I will start a spark, which in turn will ignite the kindling, and produce fire!" The Utah raptors were shocked at his explanation, and lack of fear, so they gathered all the nearer in order to see if everything would turn out as he had just described.

He had to lean a little bit forward as some of the Utahraptors were looking directly over his shoulders, and head. He then struck the rocks together about 4-5 times, and smoke started to emanate from the kindling. It began to grow into a small flame and in no time, they had a roaring fire.

The smell of the different ancient trees burning was intoxicating. He had loved the smell of natural fires ever since he was a boy. Now, surrounded by deadly carnosaurs, that could eat him in two bites, yet viewed him as one of their own, next to a fire, where everyone was enjoying the warmth, he thought back to his life before coming to this island. He thought of how he had always felt so in control of all the situations around him. He thought of long lost friends, and the family that he had left behind. He felt a knot begin to build in his stomach. Just at the moment that he was about to start crying, the leader of the Utahraptors came over. She looked over him with her piercing gaze, then sat down next to him and rolled a little to the side so that he was leaning against her side. She then spoke, "You are different, I like you!" His heart was about to burst. He was at a loss for words. First, he was feeling overwhelmed with homesickness, and now the leader of a group of carnosaurs, ...liked HIM?...

He drifted in and out of consciousness and elation, he was tired, had he just imagined it, would a utahraptor ever enjoy a humans' company. He was sure that he had misheard, yet here he was resting on her side about to drift off to sleep. Finally he let sleep overtake him, and bring whatever dreams it wanted.

He was hunting again, he looked over to his right side and a utahraptor was there with him. He looked over to his left and a torvosaur was there. He then looked ahead to see what he was hunting. It was the library at dinotopia, no, it was the librarian. He started to move forward and there was a loud noise, the torvosaur ran away! The utahraptor then jumped to attention and stood in front of him, protecting him from an angered brachiosaur. The earth shook, he climbed on the utahraptors back, and together they fled the scene. He was about to get away, when all of a sudden the brachiosaur knocked him from his mount and he woke up- The Utahraptor leader was awake and had gotten up. She was very quiet though as though she were listening to something. He remained still. If there was something that could spook a utahraptor, he didn't want to find out what!

She then stood up and came over to him. He was not expecting what she said next, "I had dream, you were hunting, there was torvosaur and an angry brachiosaur." He was stunned, what did it mean? She continued, "You were looking for something, brachiosuar was not happy, he chased us..." Something about the way she had said "us", made him slightly uncomfortable. She had also kind of looked embarrassed, if a utahraptor could look embarrassed. She then looked at him straight in the eyes, and narrowed them a bit, "Do you understand?" she queried.

He understood that the two of them were connected in a way that he could not understand. He was sure that their destinies would lie together, how, he did not know though. After a brief silence, all he replied was a quiet, "Yes". Had she already guessed that he had had the same dream? Would he ever dare admit it? It seemed too intimate, too sacred, to be real.

The Utahraptors broke camp soon afterwards, and they were on the march again. He seemed to guess that they were headed west, but also slightly north. It wasn't as if he had much say in their directions at all... But he did enjoy they feeling of protection that the Utahraptors afforded him while travelling through this part of the Rainy Basin.

Early in the morning it started to rain. I was excited to get moving again, yet the raptors decided it would be best to take shelter in a nearby cave. I started a fire and started to clean up the cave a bit so that we could all rest and enjoy each others' company. The Utahraptor leader came over and asked me to meet her in the back of the cave. I obediently followed.
